Introduction

Prof. Fiorella Chauca

Welcome to the Begining Conversational Spanish class. My name is Fiorella Chauca, and I will facilitate your learning experience of essentials of Spanish for conversational and practical usage, in this course.  I want students to succeed, so I dedicate my time to promptly answering emails addressing questions and concerns. I enjoy providing feedback comments to help students build upon and evolve in their learning.

Course Description

This course studies Spanish as a foreign language within its rich and relevant cultural contexts. It combines
the natural and communicative approach emphasizing three of the four language skills (listening, reading, and speaking).
Students will study essentials of Spanish for conversational and practical usage; with intensive practice in the expression and comprehension of spoken Spanish. This course emphasizes the practical application of the language, not grammar acquisition or review.
An important goal of the course is to master basis communicative and functional skills gaining a cross-cultural understanding of Peninsular and Latin American societies. This course is taught entirely in Spanish. CSU/UC 3 Credits.

At the end of the course the student will be able to:
1. Demonstrate competence by communicating through reading, speaking, and listening at the novice mid-level.
2. Analyze the relationship between perspectives, practices, and products of the Spanish culture at the novice mid-level.

What to Expect in this Course

Students will receive a welcome email on the week prior to the first day of class. Please log into Canvas on the first scheduled day of class and complete the Day 1 module, to avoid being reported as No Show (automatic drop). The content is delivered in Canvas following a weekly modular configuration.  All course communication is through the student's canyons email.

Start with your weekly assignments from the first day of the week, set aside valuable time to review and practice the material learned every week, use the resources available for your course (tutoring, in-person meetings, study groups, etc.), and finally maintain good communication with your instructor.

This class will feature both ONLINE and In-Person instruction.

Types of Assessments

Class time will be devoted to practice, application, and production of the language. Our international language courses at the university level are taught in the target language.
Therefore, total immersion shall be expected. The class will be communicative, practical and will require interaction with everyone in the class. Although you may not understand everything, you are expected to make your best effort to follow along, ask questions, and participate to the best of your ability in the target language. The goal of this class is to increase your ability to communicate in Spanish.

Other Relevant Course Information

This class requires no previous knowledge of Spanish; however, other students may have studied Spanish
before. Do not let this disparity disturb you. Do your best, take risks in trying to express your thoughts and do not get
too concerned with errors. Errors are a natural part of the learning process.
