Introduction

Me with Jay Leno, his Jet Powered car was featured in a commercial here at the College.

My Love for Muscle Cars Restoration yea, that's what got me here and loving it. Hi, most people just call me Will (only one person that I know of called me Mr. Will) and I hope to become your welding instructor. I'm an old "Dude", 71 years as a matter of fact but, very young at heart and mind. Those of you who took my 101A class can contest to that, you others, well, come and join us, I promise you if you do diligent work with Lecture and in the Welding Lab/Shop, I'll do my best to teach you how.

In this class, we will be taking this Welding Course based on the Canvas Platform.  This means, Online Lectures supported by, Media forms, Activities such as homework, quizzes, and test will also be included online. But wait, that's not a bad thing, "WE" need this lecture time because, knowledge about welding is part of why you are taking the class and why I'm excited to teach you, remember?  You will be introduced to high tech applications such as "Lincoln Electric Virtual Welding Machines"  more about that later.  The best, most advanced machines that Lincoln Electric has to offer is what "WE" use.  Well lit designed welding booths with plenty of room with ventilation.  So, the bottom line is you want be guessing about what and how to, most of that comes from your lectures with  no trick question, although relaxed, you will be taught how to become a real world welder using the best to offer.

Okay now, lets talk about the Lab/Shop.  " Safety First Always"  remember those Virtual Welders?, we use them to help aid you with the learning process. Your training on the Virtual includes charts, graphs, and scores that are "not course graded", Yep not graded. Bottomline, its a tool  for you, I think of it as a Accelerated Welding Learning Machine. Check out the Video below. Also as an option, we have a program call Open Lab on Saturdays. Guess who supervise it, "Yep", you're right.

And, we weld, using the best machines Lincoln Electric has to offer.  Again, online lecture?, we need this, think of it like this, 50% of what is needed to be a good or even great welder.  The welding booth are spacious(sounds like a room, right) the, are large and well ventilated.  I love Welding and hopefully, so will you.

Students will learn how to operate welding and thermal equipment to industry accepted safety standard.  Apply practical earning skills that require Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW) in a flat position weld.  You will also be required to complete two SENSE online exam via the American Welding Society (AWS)  http://awo.aws.org/sense/  The SENSE exams can be accessed through Canvas.  Three attempts are allowed for each SENSE exam.  Any technical difficulties are to be addresses through the AWS SENSE - not your instructor.  There is a link name  " Report a Problem" that you should use to get help.

Course Description

This is the first of a three-part series introducing the theory and application of Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).  Emphasizes safety procedure, use of SMAW welding equipment and proper welding techniques in accordance with the American Welding Society SENSE program.  You are required to wear ALL Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) at all times when you enter the Lab/Shop.  You are also required to complete ALL welding project assignments.
