2021-2022 Students

Welcome to the 2021/2022 Canyons Promise First Year Cohort.

Canyons Promise is a comprehensive college student success program that will help not only with the financial side of attending college, but also with the day to day responsibilities of being a college student. We are here to support you as you navigate your way to success and you couldn't be in better hands! Our Canyons Promise Team is made up of faculty and staff who have a common goal: your success! And we will be here every step of the way.

Speaking of steps, your first step is to spend some time reviewing the items that we've included in the following accordion menu. You will find important information about our program, our counseling component, summer and fall registration, orientation, and more. Please review the materials and jot down any questions that may come up. You can reach out to us for clarification anytime.

There are many items you must complete this summer. To stay on track, download our Promise Summer 2021 Checklist.

Again, we are so happy to have you on-board and we look forward to working with you. Your success is our success so we are going to do our best to make sure you achieve your goals!

Students must enroll in and successfully complete the two Summer College Skills courses listed above during the summer 2021 term. These online courses are designed to prepare students for their first year in college and include topics such as: essential college success skills, navigating online courses, utilizing online resources, educational planning, complete career assessments, and more! We have found that students in our program have greater success when given the opportunity to hone these skills before jumping into the rigors of academic life.

The two courses are run through COC's School of Personal and Professional Learning and will be 100% online. The courses will be offered as a cohort, meaning they will be taken together with the same instructor. The courses will be one week long and be a total of 16 hours. There will be no cost associated with these two courses. Students must have a summer 2021 enrollment application on file in order to have the ability to register for the courses. Check your My Canyons account for your exact summer 2021 registration date/time.

In case you need some help finding these courses or getting registered, we have created a few videos for you below.

Once you register for your courses, IF you get the below "warning" message, DO NOT WORRY! You can disregard that and continue with your registration.

    • NC.CGSL-001-XXXXX - Warning: Student's academic level doesn't match the course.
    • NC.CGSL-002-XXXXX - Warning: Student's academic level doesn't match the course.

**Please note, if you are planning to take other courses for credit this summer, you will be responsible for your Student Bill. Canyons Promise DOES NOT PAY FOR SUMMER OR WINTER TERMS.

Canyons Promise only pays tuition and fees for fall and spring semesters. We encourage you to consult with a counselor regarding the courses you plan to take.

  • Fall registration is just around the corner! A benefit of Canyons Promise is you will receive a priority registration date for fall and spring semesters. As a new member of Canyons Promise, we will work to assign you a priority registration date for the fall. You can check your My Canyons account on May 21st to view the updated fall registration date.

As a quick reminder, to find your registration dates, you will log into your My Canyons account, under the Registration section, you will click on My Registration Time. There you will view the start date and start time for "2021FA" (fall 2021). This indicates when your registration opens and will remain open until the beginning of the semester. You will see two dates listed for the term. You can begin to register on the earliest day and time you see.

During June 1 - June 4, our team planned a week of support to help get you started and registered into your fall courses. We will have Counseling workshops so you can get information about what courses to choose to take during fall. Additionally, we will have drop-in counseling open so you can quickly meet with a counselor to ensure you are enrolling in the right courses for fall. Below provides some more details about these support activities. At this time these Counseling workshops are over. Copies of the presentations are available in our Canyons Promise Canvas shell.

As of 6/7/2021, if you need assistance with choosing fall courses, you can access our Promise Counseling services in our Canyons Promise Canvas shell. We have one-hour appointments for students to book (if they are not full) and drop-in counseling available each week. Below is the drop-in counseling schedule for the summer. To access the link to join drop-in and review all counseling services offered by Canyons Promise, log into your Canvas account and click on our "Canyons Promise Year One- 2021/22" tile/shell.

    • Canyons Promise Program Contract

We are currently finalizing our orientation schedule. We are planning to have multiple offerings between mid-July to early-August. When we have finalized information, we will send it out to you.

  • Canvas is the web-based learning management system used by College of the Canyons to support online learning and teaching (and sometimes used for on-ground classes, too!) It allows faculty to post grades, information, and assignments online.

Though Canyons Promise is a "program" of the college and not a "course," we use Canvas as the primary source with which to communicate important information to our first and second year cohorts. You will also hear this referred to as the "Canyons Promise Canvas Shell." We will work to get all our new students added to our "Canyons Promise Canvas Shell" by Friday, May 28, 2021. Once you are registered for your first classes, you will find that you have a Canyons Promise Year One-2021/22 tile on your Canvas Dashboard.

Again, as this is the primary location for the exchange of information between us and you, it is IMPERATIVE that you check-in regularly for updates, announcements, deadlines, discussions, and more! The Canvas shell will include links to access the Promise counselors for drop-in appointments and for scheduling one-hour appointments. You will be using these links a lot so make sure you know where to find them!

Your first assignment in your Canyons Promise Canvas Shell will be to complete the REQUIRED Canyons Promise Contract. Click on the "Assignments" link in the navigation bar to select the Canyons Promise Contract. This will be available as of July 13, 2021.

We cannot emphasize enough how critical to your success our Canyons Promise shell will be. The shell is constantly updated by our team and notifications are sent on a regular basis. While many of you may be familiar with Canvas, as it was used by many high schools during the 2019/20 and 2020/21 academic years, you may want to get a refresher on how to login to Canvas and how to navigate it. Check out the Canvas Student Guides provided by the COC Online Education Office.
  • You are now a registered college student at College of the Canyons. As such, you will be held to certain standards which may, until now, sound unnecessary. One of these standards is the consistent use of your @my.canyons.edu email address. Moving forward with this program, we will NOT respond to emails sent from private email accounts. All email correspondence with Canyons Promise, other departments on campus, and with your instructors MUST come from your college email address or via the messaging system in Canvas.

As we've mentioned, you may email us at Promise@canyons.edu anytime you have a question. Please make sure to give us a brief description of your question in the "Subject" line and expand on that question more thoroughly in the body of your email. You MUST include your full name and your College of the Canyons Student ID number in your signature. This is the only way we can confirm your identity and look into your academic record. Remembering this step will save everyone the back and forth of several emails to get the information.

You MUST be willing to check your Canvas regularly for announcements and updates as well as your college email inbox. If you miss a deadline, an assignment, or a request for information because you did not check your email, you will have no recourse.

Finally, make sure that your contact information is up to date. This information can be updated in your My Canyons and MAP profiles or you may contact the Admissions & Records Office and let them know of the change.
