Hi…my name is Jason Oliver and I’ll be your instructor for the ARCHT-140 Materials and Methods of Construction course. I am a licensed California Architect, Chair of the COC Architecture & Interior Design Program and a LEED Accredited Professional with specialty in Building Design & Construction (LEED AP BD&C).

Course Description

An in-depth review of the nature and characteristics of the most common building materials and their appropriate uses in construction.  In addition, an overview of the various principles of building construction and the methodology used to apply the different materials to the correct structural system on a final building form, which in turn affects the overall appearance and physical dimension of the finished building.

What to Expect in this Course

This class will utilize the Canvas Learning Management System (LMS) to complete our course requirements including discussions, grades, and other course activities (note that only students registered for the course will have access to the course on Canvas). Please refer to the Canvas Login Page for the most up to date Canvas login and support information and log into Canvas by visiting https://coc.instructure.com/login/canvas on the first scheduled date of our course. If you have not used Canvas before, please take time to review the Canvas tutorial so that you are familiar with the interface prior to the beginning of class. For assistance with Canvas please call (877) 889-9052 or direct your question(s) via e-mail to cvsupport@canyons.edu. Note that you should be computer literate, with at least basic knowledge of Internet navigation and email procedures since the college can only provide minimal technological support. COC also provides students with an email account for all college business and communication; please go to https://www.canyons.edu/studentservices/admissions/students/email.php to set up your student email account.

In order to comply with FERPA privacy requirements, correspondence with the college not coming from your student email account will be disregarded. I will be sending out announcements through the Canvas site and you may miss important information if you forget to check your COC student email. Similarly, certain e-mail providers either block or forward emails automatically to a junk mail folder, so please double check that course email communications are not in your spam folder.

Because this course is completely online it is ESSENTIAL that you read through all of the course materials located on the course website. Additional information on this class as well as info on how to download your free copy of the software for use in the class will be provided in the syllabus that will be accessible from Canvas once the class has started based on the dates listed above. .

Other Relevant Course Information

…. many students register for online courses believing they will be easier or require less time than a traditional face-to-face class. Online courses sometimes require a greater commitment of your time & focus than a traditional course and while you will definitely benefit by not having to travel to campus or logging into a live Zoom session like you would for a traditional class, the discipline and responsibility necessary for completing the course is essentially all on your shoulders (…you will need to schedule time every week for viewing the lectures and completing the required homework & exams on-time).
