Introduction

Hello, I’m Dr. Gelker and I think you will enjoy Art 110 (Art 115 is good too). In Art 110, we travel (visually) to Stonehenge (Great Britain) and witness the Greeks triumph over the Trojans. In Art 110, we will see the Egyptian pyramids across the Nile; learn the secrets of the Sumerians (Ancient Near East), and those of the Coliseum in Rome. Yes, you too can discover the connection between MacDonald’s and the Crusades (Middle Ages) and more when you enroll in this course. Here’s the good news it transfers. I hope to see you!

Course Description

(FYI this description is on the course syllabus.) Art 110 is an introductory course in art history. It presents works of art in both chronological and geographical sequence. We begin in 35,000 BC with the art of the Prehistoric era, and end in the thirteenth century with that of the Medieval era. While doing so, we will examine the social and cultural factors that influenced the creation of major works of art. Concurrently, we will analyze the formal and aesthetic elements of individual works of art. The course is intended to develop an appreciation of the international and varied language of artistic form, and an understanding of the many and varied forces that shaped its development from the Paleolithic era through the Middle Ages.

What to Expect in this Course

What to Expect: You will know exactly what is expected of you in this class. For example, you will receive a list of images and a study guide (AKA “lecture notes”) for each of the art historical periods covered in this course. In short, I have taken your notes for you. There is no guesswork. Your job is to read them and come to class.

Technology: This OnlineLive class. We use Zoom and mycanyons email. Zoom best resembles a f-2-f class. This is why we use it. Many of you are familiar with Zoom. A link comes to your mycanyons email account; you click on it and you are in class! You can attend class using a computer, laptop, tablet, pad, or phone. If a webcam is not available, don’t worry. Coming to class is the finest tool you have. I do not use Canvas.

Types of Assessments

Exams, Assignments, Grades: There are five grades each worth 100% points. The final is not cumulative. There is a review before every exam. An exam can be a combination of in-class and take-home (50% take-home, 50% in-class= 100%). One such take-home is a written assignment.  Grades: You will know your grade at all times. Here’s how: add exam scores together, and then divide the total sum by the number of exams, voila! The grading scale is objective and the usual 100-90= A, 89-80= B, and so it goes.

Textbook Information

Textbook: You won’t need a textbook for the first three weeks of class. There are students who never buy a textbook for my classes. I don't require one, but new students often feel better buying a used copy of Gardner's Art Through the Ages, Vol I. (Choose an online site and it makes no difference if it’s a Global or Western edition.) I discuss this and more the first day of class when we go over the syllabus. My advice is to wait for class and don’t worry about the textbook now.

Other Relevant Course Information

Success: Come to class and you will do well.

What you will learn: An artist is a human being. All people are a part of the time in which they live. With this in mind, you will learn many unexpected things that will make your world larger. The more you know, the larger your world becomes. No one wants to live his or her life like a canary in a coalmine.
