Introduction

Hello and welcome to Art 140, an introductory course on the basic fundamentals of 2-D pictorial art! This is a semester length course lasting 16 weeks. Art 140 is an introductory level, art studio course.

Course Description

Art 140 is an introductory level, art studio course during which we will make several 2-D artworks that explore different concepts and ideas on how to make an effective picture or design. You are expected to spend a minimum of 10 hours per week on class work.

We will utilize various learning formats in this class, but central among them will be the high-resolution images and videos that you will view online, and the use of the College of the Canyons online learning platform: Canvas. Therefore, in order to be successful in this class you should be able to navigate the internet successfully as well as being able to download  (and work with) images and files.  However, no special software (photoshop etc.) is required.

In addition to making art, we will use lectures and critiques to discuss art. Your ability to be articulate and a willingness to discuss your art and that of your peers is therefore essential.

Finally, we will also view and analyze works of art and design by famous practitioners throughout the ages, to learn from many great masters.

What to Expect in this Course

  • You will not be able to access the class until the course's designated start date
  • This class is held entirely online – we will not meet face-to-face at any point
  • We will use various remote platforms to conduct class: Canvas, Zoom, email etc.
  • Some classes require us to ‘meet online’  at the published class times/days – this is ‘synchronous learning’  (it happens in real-time)
  • However, much of the classwork will be done in your own time – this is ‘asynchronous learning’  (it happens at other times)
  • Log into class here: http://coc.instructure.com
  • If you have never done so, your default login is your ‘my canyons’ user name and your default password is your 9 digit student ID #
  • Learning modules are completed weekly or bi-weekly – therefore, regular work habits and postings within the Canvas website are necessary
  • If you need a laptop then contact the Admissions & Records Department who have a limited supply for student check-out
  • Check with your internet provider to see if they are giving discounts for educational use at home of internet-based learning
  • Any class comes to life based on the quality of interaction between students. A successful online class requires that you bring enthusiasm and interest to the classroom – and be willing to display an interest in the learning of others at the same time
  • There is no textbook!

As a final note, I hope this class inspires in you an interest in the subject of art in general and in making pictures and designs specifically. If you develop an interest in making art on a regular basis and supplement this by visiting galleries and museums in your hometown (when they re-open!), I am sure you will find it an enriching, rewarding and endlessly educational experience. So with that, let’s get started!
