Introduction

Greetings and welcome to biology 100, this course is designed for non biology majors. In this course we will examine the journey of atoms, molecules cells, energy, DNA, genetics, evolution and ecology.

Course Description

Explores the structure, function and development of living systems from cells to ecosystems. UC credit limitation: No credit for BIOSCI-100 if taken after BIOSCI-106, 107, 107H, 201, 202, 204, 205, 215, 216, 221, or 250.

What to Expect in this Course

Dates and Times of Required Meetings:       

Lab: Thursday 8:00 am - 11:05 am by CANVAS

Lecture: 3 hrs a week Asynchronous format by CANVAS

 

Tool(s) Used to Meet:

Need a laptop or computer with a working video camera and microphone (Tablets, iPad or cell phones will not always work and will not be allowed) You need to download Google Chrome as internet browser because it tends to work best. You need access to Youtube and Netflix as well. All exams and quizzes are proctor using Proctorio. You must install application and agree to be recorded during this class. Meetings are done through ZOOM by CANVAS. You must install application.

•    Weekly mandatory meetings on ZOOM through CANVAS
•    Need a laptop or desk computer with a working video camera and microphone (no cellular phones, tablets, or ipads)
•    You need to download Google Chrome as your internet browser, Proctorio, CANVAS and ZOOM. You must be on camera during class time.
•    You will have weekly labs assignments, quizzes and extra credit.
•    Weekly asynchronous lectures (1-2) by CANVAS
•    Current event project and proposal for the semester
•    5 lecture exams and 2 lab practical exams
 

Types of Assessments

Points are earned from exams, lab practicals, lab quizzes, ecology movie, current event project, participation and lab assignments. Lecture SLO: Characterize the nature of science and scientific inquiry, and describe and analyze biological concepts from cells to ecosystems on a basic level. Laboratory SLO: Evaluate and analyze data and observations based on standard methods of scientific inquiry.
