Dear Learners,

Welcome to your Bus 100 class. I am glad to see all of you in this class. College of the Canyons is a very close community and I would like this to be the best possible experience for you. As we go through the course, feel free to contact me, if you have any questions and or concerns. Please read the course syllabus for important information about how we will communicate, and etiquette of online expectations.

I know you are experienced at working on the internet, reading e-articles, and communicating with your friends online. We will utilize those skills you already have in a unique way, and I hope you learn some more techniques.

Course Description

This is a short-term intensive, and one-hundred percent online section. We have exactly 5 weeks to cover materials usually covered in 16 weeks, which means you have to invest more time on a daily base than the regular course, almost 10 to 15 hours per week. You have to finish weekly requirements by the week's deadline.

All exams will be taken online using Canvas exam option. We will go over all coursework, questions, and unclear subjects during online interactions. However, students may complete the online work and project at 2 pm or 2 am, whichever best fits each individual schedule, as long as it is before the posted deadlines. Students are evaluated on the quality of work completed; one is evaluated on what one does and does not complete.

After reading the syllabus, let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Please indicate you understand the expectations, guidelines, responsibilities, and will try to abide by them by posting a short response to the discussion board.

The virtual classroom will be available for entrance January 04.

All students are required to have their own valid COC assigned e-mail address for this course. Please note your classmates and I will communicate with you through this e-mail. Hence, you should check this email regularly during the course.

The following are some guidelines and requirements that will help you successfully navigate and complete this class:

  1. Check your computer status. Students should have access to a computer with minimum requirements. Otherwise, you should get to the habit of using a library or TLC computers.
  2. A Word Processing program (Microsoft Word) is necessary. Spread Sheet Program is optional, but very helpful.
  3. Access to Canvas and the Textbook’s site.
  4. Text: Business Essentials, 13th edition; By: Ronald J. Ebert, Ricky W. Griffin; Pearson Publishing.  For more detail, please contact the COC bookstore.
  5. Please read the guidelines and the syllabus, and then post your response (“I will abide by these expectations.”) to this one indicating that you have read and understood the stated guidelines. Moreover, you agree with those guidelines. We will review the syllabus during the first session on Monday, the first day of class.

As you know, we have a short time to cover our learning objectives, make sure you are prepared and ready on day one. Make sure you participated in Canvas orientation. In other word, in order to access this class online you must first complete an online tutorial. The tutorial will assist you with understanding Canvas, COC’s course management program. There is an individual homework assignment for each chapter… These questions are from the end of the chapter questions.

When answering Discussion or homework questions, try to explain, expand, give examples, & etc… Don’t just provide a sentence or two answer, show your own understanding of the subject.

What to Expect in this Course

You can start by reading and studying the summary of a chapter, go over the PowerPoint Presentation, then start working on the Discussions, and end of the chapter's assignment.

Here are some allocations:

1st Segment Ends at the end of week 2 with Exam 1.

2nd Segment Ends at the end of week 3 with Exam 2.

3rd Segment Ends at the end of week 4 with Exam 3.

Class Project (Final Draft) is due at the same time.

4th Segment Ends on Thursday of week 5 with Exam 4.

Exams will be available 48 hours before their deadlines. No excuses will be accepted, including lack of reliable Internet connection and or ....

Types of Assessments

Students will be assessed via:

1. Homework from the end of each chapter submitted online.

2. Discussions participation.

3. Class Project, and

4. four multiple-choice, short answer, true-false exams.

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
