Introduction

Hi!  My name is Dr. Tara Williams and I happy to have you in my course this semester!  This course does not have a lecture component, and we will only meet OnlineLive for our laboratory sessions.  There will be videos, lectures, and other supplemental materials posted on Canvas, but there is NOT an OnlineLive lecture component for this course, so please be aware of that before the course begins.

Course Description

The course consists of a theoretical and mathematical treatment of some of the fundamental relationships in chemistry.  The focus is on algebraic solutions to word problems and development of a basic chemistry vocabulary.  The laboratory work is intended to develop skills in measurement, observation and in making deductions from observations of chemical phenomena.  The primary goal of this course is to prepare the student to take Chemistry 201 (General Chemistry I).

What to Expect in this Course

Expect to be busy and expect to check in frequently! I will use Canvas and your college issued email account as the primary methods of communication for the course, so it is absolutely critical that you check your email and the Canvas site every day. Things change quickly in a chemistry course, and so you need to make sure you’re up to date.

As this is a chemistry course, the estimated time spent on this course outside of lecture and lab, is fifteen hours per week, in addition, to the time spent in lab in lecture.

I will post the module for each week on Canvas on Sundays, earlier if possible.  These modules will contain all of the information for the week.  I expect you to log in to the course for labs as scheduled.  Online homework, quizzes, and exams will be offered on Chem101, outside of Canvas, and on paper submitted on Canvas.
