Public Speaking is an intimidating subject for many. It is also a required course in order to transfer or to receive an associate’s degree; and that’s because public speaking is one of the most important skills to develop if you want to succeed in life - academically, professionally, and/or interpersonally.

Course Description

The course catalog states:

“Examines the principles and practices of public speaking, communication theory, and techniques for public speaking. Includes speech organization, development, research, audience analysis, reasoning, and presentation skills for the development of informative and persuasive speeches.”

What to Expect in this Course

This class is 100% Online. You will receive preloaded course content on Canvas - which you will complete on your own time – and you will deliver your speeches LIVE via Zoom during the designated class hours.

Meeting times/dates are as follows: Tuesdays 6:30PM-10PM; 6/8; 6/15; 6/22; 6/29; 7/6

Types of Assessments

Students will complete the following assignments in this class: outlines, slideshows, presentations, bibliographies, and peer evaluations.

Fundamentals of Public Speaking, Open Education Resource (PDF available via Canvas or a printed version can be purchased from the bookstore). This document will serve as a valuable resource to assist in your assignments, the final exam, and the construction of your speeches. Please treat it as such by reading it thoroughly and reviewing noteworthy sections when needed.

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:
