Introduction

My name is Claudenice Braga-McCalister (professor McCalister) and I will be your professor for this course.  I have a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, and I work as a Project Manager and Safety Director at Lundgren Management Corporation.  I have been teaching at COC for 3 1/2 years.  I have taught Introduction to Construction and Construction Engineering, Blueprint Reading for Construction, California Building Code, The Construction Process – Planning & Scheduling, Construction Estimating Principles, and Introduction to Construction Inspections & Codes. Up to the start of the COVID-19 Pandemic, I was teaching 100% on-ground courses. However, due to the pandemic, I started teaching 100% Online and now we have the challenge to teach the Online Synchronous Format.  Originally, this class was not designed to be an online-based class. However, I have done everything possible to make this format suitable to your learning expectations. This class is very interesting, and it is the basis for everything you will learn in the Construction Industry. I hope you will find this course accessible and easy to understand.

Course Description

The purpose of this course is to present an introductory review and discussion of construction estimating. Review of basic construction terminology and concepts that apply to residential and commercial construction.   The course is intended to supplement the student’s technical knowledge in construction with an understanding of applicable estimating practices that must be considered during the bidding, design and construction.

What to Expect in this Course

This is a 16-week Online course and it is very intense. This course has a lot of information and work that is due each week.  You are expected to dedicate at least 10 hours of study beyond the lecture time on a weekly basis.  Scheduling and link for participation for Office Hours meetings will be shared through ZOOM Meetings. There will be graded class discussions and different techniques that will be applied to aid your learning on the online environment. In addition, there will be quizzes to access the progress of your learning.  The midterm will occur around the week 8 and the final exam will occur during the last week of the class. All handouts,  lectures, and assignments will be organized in modules that will open weekly on Mondays. The exams will be done completely online on Canvas and they will be timed. The final exam will occur during the last week of the class. 2. Teamwork is the best way to succeed in this course. I strongly advise you to work close with your group to study and solve problems related to the content of each module. However, you must submit your own work in your Canvas account.
  3. Due to the workload of this class, I strongly recommend you pay close attention to the due dates. If you leave everything do be done in the last minute, your chances of success in this class are greatly diminished.
