Hello!  My name is Aivee (pronounced Ivy) Ortega and I am a counselor and instructor at College of the Canyons.  Welcome to Counseling 120, University Transfer Planning! Course Description

Counseling 120 uses the learning management system Canvas as our online classroom. There will be no in person meetings. In order to participate in this class, you must have access to a computer, internet services, e-mail and to a camera or scanner.  All communications and assignments are through Canvas. The goal of this course is to prepare you for the challenges in selecting a transfer school, including the application process. You will have the opportunity to identify the criteria that is important to you in a transfer school and write a decision analysis paper.

What to Expect in this Course

After completing this course, you should be able to:

  1. Evaluate potential transfer options using critical thinking and decision-making skills.
  2. Compare and contrast the UC/CSU and independent college systems basic function, structure and requirements.
  3. Compare and contrast the general education and major course requirements for a specific transfer goal.

Other Relevant Course Information

Keep in mind this is a short-term course. You will be expected to participate in discussions each week and complete all assignments by the posted due dates.  This requires logging into Canvas at least every other day. Late work will not be accepted. It is important to have good self-management skills and self-discipline to keep up with the assignments in order to be successful in this class.  Just like in a traditional classroom, you are expected to PARTICIPATE, SHOW UP (ONLINE) AND DO THE WORK

This course will be available on the scheduled start date. You will be expected to log into the Canvas classroom on the first day of class. If you add this class after the first day of the term it may take up to 24 hours before you will have access to Canvas. If you cannot log in after 24 hours, please send me an e-mail.

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
