Hello! Welcome to ECE 102. I am so excited that you have chosen to continue your learning journey. In this course we will be diving into critical knowledge that will allow you to service families with compassion, cultural humility and enthusiasm. In addition, we will be learning about ourselves and how that impacts our role with the children and families we are working with.
Examines the developing child in a societal context focusing on the interrelationship of family, school, and community and emphasizing historical and sociocultural factors. The processes of socialization and identity development will be highlighted, showing the importance of respectful, reciprocal relationships that support and empower families. Formerly ECE-125.
What to Expect in this Course
If you do not participate for more than a week, you will be dropped due to excessive absence. You are expected to log onto the course at least 3 times a week and / or as many times as needed to complete the assigned work. In addition, be sure to read all assignments and directions CAREFULLY, as the internet and email are the primary source of gathering information. You must read all text with care.
Threaded discussions*** are integrated throughout each week of this course. Generally speaking, the first post to a weekly discussion marked with *** have 2 date submissions Your response is due by Wednesday (11:59pm) of that week. Subsequent posts to classmates are due by the Sunday (11:59pm) of the week.
1. When you are writing your assignments please do not type your responses in capital letters.
2. When you upload your word documents, be sure to write your name on the assignment as though you were going to hand it to the instructor.
3. Check the comment boxes in the grade book regularly after your work has been posted.
4. If you do not participate for more than a week, you will be dropped due to excessive absence.
5. Log onto the course at least 3 times a week and as many times as needed to complete the assigned work.
6. All attachments must be done in Microsoft Word. If you are using another word processing program, please save your work as an .rtf file or .pdf.
This course contains some threaded discussions in which you will be asked to dialogue with your classmates on a particular topic. Merely posting your
thoughts at the last minute will not constitute a quality discussion thread. Below is a rubric which will outline the characteristics of a quality participation in a
threaded discussion and the corresponding point values. Use it as a guide to be sure you are participating fully in our discussions.
The threaded discussion assignments will be graded according to each discussion's rubric.
Basic Class Structure:
Each week you will Read 1-2 and sometimes 3 Chapters
Complete the activities associated with the specific week
Take Exam/Quiz that covers that week's readings
Besides reading the textbook and online material you will be involved in threaded discussions with classmates, simulation exercises, video clip viewing, small group discussion, charting and case study analysis. Be sure to carefully read the instructions to each assignment before completing. Please pay attention to each assignments due date.
In this course, points are earned for timely, successful completion of assignments. As some elements of our learning community are emergent, assignments may be added or removed at the Instructor's discretion based on the needs of the class. Any changes to posted assignments will be communicated via announcement or email.

Attendance and Participation Policy:
Even though this is a fully online course, it is not self-paced. Students are required to log in to the class multiple times per week and complete weekly check-ins, discussion forums, assignments, and a number of other activities all with various due dates.
Participation in each week of the class is mandatory. Each week runs from Monday (12:01 am) to Sunday (11:59pm).
Since success in this online class is based on your active participation and completion of assignments, anyone who does not participate or post in class for 1 full week will be dropped for non-participation.
You are responsible for notifying me in advance of any absence or scheduling conflict, via email. You may be dropped from the class if you miss two or more weeks without notifying me.
Although I retain the right to drop you given the above circumstances, it is nevertheless your responsibility as a student to withdraw from class if you do not intend to complete it.
This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:
