Introduction
My English 103 course has a theme of media and society. Together we will examine texts in literature, television, film, art, and music through critical lenses to understand the social and cultural implications of these texts within society.
Students will be responsible for creating (2) original 5-8 page essays and (1) portfolio assignment totaling 9 pages. The first will be an advertisement analysis using the semiotic method as well as descriptive sociocultural connections. The second, and most challenging essay will be a critical lens theory assignment that will encourage students to select a piece of popular fiction and examine it through a lens of their choosing. The final essay in the course is a revision and expansion of essay #1 with a self-reflection assignment associated. These essays should exhibit strong analysis, diction, MLA format, with strong grammar, diction and overall academic discourse. Students will also have a final exam.
