Introduction

Hi everyone! I’m Dr. Nazanin Naraghi. I’ve taught at College of the Canyons since 2014 both in the Geography department and in Environmental Studies. I have a doctoral degree that specializes in Human Geography as such this is one of my favorite introductory courses to teach. This is an engaging and dynamic course that requires enthusiasm and commitment. Keeping up with the readings is essential and your scholarly involvement in class discussion is indispensable. That being said, I’m also understanding of the way our lives have been transformed by the pandemic. This class will hold space for flexibility and kindness. We use a free OER textbook for this class as well as a geographic memoir written by Sarah Broom. The book costs less than twenty dollars. This course is 100% online. You will work through the weekly modules at your own discretion and will have no online lecture requirement. Each week on Sundays the module for the week will be made available to you. Assignments will be due on Thursdays (discussions) and Sundays (class assignments, quizzes, papers, ). Canvas will also be utilized to complete course assignments, take quizzes and tests, keep track of grades, and access course study materials.

Course Description

Students will study the distributions of human activities at global and regional scales, and the causes and consequences of those distributions. Specific topics covered will include natural resources, agriculture, economic activity, urban and rural settlements, and environmental degradation. Special attention is given to studying power relations via race, class, sexuality, and uneven economic development. Students will also learn about the tools that human geographers use to make sense of the world and gain a basic understanding of how those tools are applied.

What to Expect in this Course

You should expect to complete a minimum of 10-12 hours of class work per week to be successful in this course. This includes:

4 to 7 hours per week of textbook readings, watching lecture videos, and going through lecture slides.

3-4 hours per week of quizzes, discussion boards, assignments, and reaction papers. You will have TWO 3 page reaction papers due in Week 8

Students will be assessed using weekly class discussions, quizzes, assignments, and two reaction papers.
