Introduction

Hi There,

This is a 5-week course for 3 credits covering U.S. History from  1865, the end of the Civil War, to present.  There will be about 7 discussions and only 3 tests to complete.  It should not be difficult for you, because you will be given the Study Questions that are to be on the tests, and to assist your reading, the answers to the Study Questions are basically in the same order in the book as the Study Questions.  So as you read, the answers "appear" to you.  If you miss, for example, the answer to Question #14, it will most likely be between the answers to Questions #13 and #15.  This and other features of the class are designed to make sure you can complete the class successfully if you are willing to read the book and work a little.

Course Description

This class covers the persons and events of American history from the end to of the Civil War to the present.  It begins with the Era of Reconstruction.  It also covers the rest of the westward movement, America’s economic miracle during the so-called Gilded Age, the Spanish-American War of 1898, and all of the twentieth century.  The twentieth century includes the Progressive Era, World War I, the Great Depression, World War II, the Cold War, and contemporary America up to the present.  Many recent presidents will be covered.  These subjects are covered across four modules.

What to Expect in this Course

The weekly work load is manageable and involves reading about two chapters per week, participating in a discussion (sometimes two) and completing the three (3) tests over the course of the 5 weeks.  The entire class is mapped out for you under "Modules" in Canvas.  You will need a computer to access Canvas and the history ebook.  There are no face-to-face meetings in this totally online class, and you can get assistance by emailing the instructor.

Types of Assessments

The three tests will include two (2) multiple-choice-questions tests and one (1) essay test.  All tests will be taken on Canvas, and you can use whatever materials you have developed from your reading (the answers to the Study Questions)  There are no surprises.  You will know almost all of the questions to be asked on all of the tests.

Textbook Information / Link to ZTC Textbook

Our text will be Cogbooks, "American History Since 1865."  This is an interactive text with reading and videos, and self-assessments on your reading.  The Study Questions for each test are taken from Cogbooks.

Other Relevant Course Information

This is a good class to earn 3 credits in 5 weeks.  The class is designed for you to succeed, as long as you are willing to work a bit.  The instructor offers extra credit to those who are interested in assuring/improving their grade.  There will probably be a class curve on final course grading based on overall student performance.

Hope to see you in the class!
