Welcome to History 111 - United States History! My name is Julie Johnson and I have my MA in History from the University of Nebraska and a Ph.D. in History from Claremont Graduate University. I am an Associate Professor here at College of the Canyons and I am looking forward to this journey with you! I have been teaching at COC since 2014. I am a resident of the Santa Clarita Valley, but I am originally from Brooklyn, New York. I love all things New York and California!
Course Description
Welcome to History 112 - United States History! The objective of this course is to help you develop an understanding of and a passion for American history and historical questioning. The American experience is multifaceted and complex. We will evaluate American history from the Reconstruction through the 21st century. Some of the concepts we will focus on include, but are not limited to, the United States expansion as an overseas empire, Theodore Roosevelt and the Gilded Age, WWI and its aftermath, the Great Depression and the New Deal social programs, WWII and the Cold War, September 11 and the Election of Barack Obama as the nation’s first African American president, and finally the continuing controversies over liberty and global citizenship.
Most importantly, Student Learning Outcomes are as follows:
- Assess the causes and ramifications of social, cultural, political, and legal change in the United States.
- Evaluate America's foreign affairs from the late 19th Century to the present.
What to Expect in this Course
History is much more than just names and dates. Some dates are important to help us frame a concept or turns in historical eras. However, historical motives are key to understanding and interpreting American history. By understanding the why of historical study, you can expand your experience with the past and prepare yourself for the future.
Types of Assessments
You will be graded on the following assignments. Journals and Discussions - 30% Midterm - 25% Final Exam - 25% of final grade People's History Report - 20% of final grade *Grades will not be rounded up.
