Role of Women In US HistoryWelcome to History 120H - Role of Women in United States History! The objective of this course, whether 100% online or in person is to help you develop an understanding of and a passion for American history and historical questioning.  Women’s experience in American History is multifaceted and complex.  We will compare and contrast women’s roles and status throughout American history.  Some of the concepts we will focus on include but are not limited to, Native American women’s roles, labor and women’s history, slave women, the cult of true womanhood, and the rise of feminism.

Course Description

Student Learning Outcomes are as follows:

  • Evaluate the political, economic, intellectual and social role of women in the history of the United States.
  • Appraise women's' contributions to American culture and examine the problems and obstacles they have experienced and overcome in the course of U.S. development.

What to Expect in this Course

History is much more than just names and dates.  Some dates are important to help us frame a concept or turns in historical eras.  However, historical motives are key to understanding and interpreting American history.  By understanding the why of historical study, you can expand your experience with the past and prepare yourself for the future.

Types of Assessments

You will be graded on the following assignments.
Journals and Discussions - 30%
Midterm - 25%
Final Exam - 25% of final grade
Remember the Ladies History Report - 20% of final grade
*Grades will not be rounded up.

This is an Open Education Resource class.  The OER text we will be using for the first few modules is embedded in Canvas and edited by yours truly!

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
