Focuses on improving cardio-respiratory endurance through a safe and effective beginning walking exercise program.

Course Description

Introduces beginning physical fitness principles applications to develop and encourage positive habits in a personalized walking for fitness program.

What to Expect in this Course

Course Objectives

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Develop the 5 health related components of physical fitness in relation to walking (cardio respiratory endurance, muscle strong, muscle endurance, flexibility, and improved body composition).
  • Experience the benefits of walking for fitness in helping to reduce stress
  • Gain knowledge to be able to formulate a quality exercise prescription on their own.

Course Format, Policies, and Conduct

  • This is a fully online course. Some materials can be downloaded for use when Internet is unavailable. 
  • Every time you log on to the Canvas, ALWAYS check the Announcement area first.  Then read the module, which will contain chapter readings, PowerPoint slides, videos, discussion boards, chapter quizzes and other assignments. 
  • There are specific due dates for each assignment on Canvas. They can be found as a list by clicking on the syllabus link. You must keep pace with these assignments & stay engaged with the course topic(s). 
  • You are required to login into the on-line course frequently.  It is your responsibility to read the module content and complete all assignments and chapter quizzes on time. There are no extensions or make-ups.
  • We will all progress through the course together, at the same pace. This is not a class in which you can complete all the work for the semester in the first week or make it all up in the last week.

  • “Netiquette” and “Civilogue”: The term “netiquette” is a combination of the words internet and etiquette.  The term “civilogue” is a combination of the words civil and dialogue.  Both terms, as well as the words used to create them, are essential to the class.  You may not agree with the views and opinions expressed by your peers, but you don’t have the right to be disrespectful.  Personal attacks, profanity, vulgarity and comments that are not productive additions to the conversation will be deleted and you will not receive credit for the assignment.

Academic Integrity (Plagiarism)

  • All students are expected to conform to the college policy on academic honesty.  As stated in the Student Rights and Responsibilities section of the COC Catalog and in the COC Schedule of Classes, “Cheating, plagiarism, fabrication, and other forms of academic dishonesty, and/or facilitating academic dishonesty” are grounds for disciplinary act. A student engaging in academic misconduct is subject to disciplinary action by the instructor and by College of the Canyons.  At a minimum, academic misconduct will result in a grade of zero for the assignment in question.
  • Plagiarism will result in a zero for the assignment, possible dismissal from the class and disciplinary action from the college.  You will not receive credit for any essay missing previous drafts, citations and/or a Works Cited page.

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:
