Introduction
Welcome to Math 100: Liberal Arts Mathematics. This is a 3-unit course in transfer-level mathematics, designed specially for students whose academic program does not require statistics or calculus. This should serve as your terminal (last) mathematics course.
Course Description
This course presents general mathematical ideas and tools used to solve practical problems including logic, sets, numbers, financial calculations, statistics, and mathematics in politics, society, and the arts.
What to Expect in this Course
You will get a "welcome" announcement via Canvas prior to the start of the course. You must then log into your Math 100 Canvas shell to complete the first assignment before the end of first week. Any student inactive through the end of week one will be dropped unless I am notified in advance with a valid reason.
You will be expected to keep up with the course by watching lecture videos (while taking notes - couple of pages per lesson), completing worksheets either individually or in your online study groups, doing regular assignments/exercises, and submitting all required sheets, projects, exams, and other work as assigned. I will provide weekly updates through Canvas and/or in brief videos.
Every student is expected to make a serious time commitment for this course every week, including about 2 hours for watching lecture videos, 1 hour for completing two worksheets, and many additional hours for learning the material and doing homework (individually or in online study groups). A homework set is due almost weekly. More time may be needed for course projects as well as exam preparation.
A typical weekly schedule: watch a series of lecture videos for a lesson while taking lesson notes, complete a worksheet for that lesson, do book exercises from the sections covered; watch another set of lecture videos and do the same. During a week when you have an exam, you watch one set of review videos, try a practice test, review your homework, and then take the real exam.
Types of Assessments
Regular assignments (exercises from the book), worksheets, course project, discussion boards, three exams, and a comprehensive final.
Textbook Information
Liberal Arts Mathematics (a free OER textbook), available through the ZTC (Zero Textbook Cost) Textbooks website of COC: https://www.canyons.edu/academics/onlineeducation/ztc/textbooks.php. The book will be linked to your Math 100 Canvas shell as well.

[Technology Requirements] Be sure you have reliable Internet access as you will spend a lot of time in Canvas. In addition, you will need a scientific calculator for some exercises and exams. Your phone and PC may already have one. You will also need either a scanning app (e.g. Genius Scan, PDF Scanner, CamScanner) or a scanner/printer so that you can create multi-page PDF files for Canvas submission.
