Welcome to a whole new world, to new horizons to pursue.

Course Description

This course presents general mathematical ideas and tools used to solve practical problems including logic, sets, numbers, financial calculations, statistics, and mathematics in politics, society, and the arts.

What to Expect in this Course

THIS IS A 100% ONLINE SECTION. It means you will be learning all of the material online.

You must log into the course Canvas shell and complete "Activity 1" by the due date designated during Week 1. Any student who never logs into the Canvas shell during the first two days of the term may be dropped unless I am notified in advance with a valid reason.

You will be expected to keep up with the course by watching lecture videos (while taking notes), completing some worksheets, doing regular assignments/exercises, and submitting, in Canvas, all required exercises and other work as assigned.

I will provide updates (Canvas announcements) at least once a week. All exams will be administered online on designated dates (each exam will be available in Canvas for 24 hours).

Every student is expected to make serious time commitment for this course every week, including a few hours for watching lecture videos and many, many additional hours for learning the material and doing homework exercises. More time may be needed for exam preparation. A homework set is due at the end of each chapter.

Each student is also to submit a course project, which is the signature assignment for this course, consisting of an essay and a video presentation. Details are given in the Canvas module.

A typical weekly schedule: you are to watch a series of lecture videos (covering several sections each week) while taking notes, take section quizzes online, organize and review the lecture notes as necessary, and do assigned exercises from the sections covered. A significant amount of time should be spent to do problem-solving and to check your answers. Before each exam, you watch review videos, try a practice test, and review your homework. Then take the online exam, typically covering 2 or 3 chapters. Those with special accommodations approved by the AAC (Academic Accommodation Center) may be allowed extra time for exams. The final exam is cumulative.

Types of Assessments

Regular assignments (exercises I have chosen), an online quiz for each section covered, chapter exams, a signature assignment project, and a comprehensive final. Extra-credit assignments may also be given.
