Introduction

Welcome to Math 100: Liberal Arts Mathematics. This is a 3-unit course in transfer-level mathematics, designed specially for students whose academic program does not require statistics or calculus. This should serve as your terminal (last) mathematics course.

Course Description

This course presents general mathematical ideas and tools used to solve practical problems including logic, sets, numbers, financial calculations, statistics, and mathematics in politics, society, and the arts. This course presents general mathematical ideas and tools used to solve practical problems including logic, sets, numbers, financial calculations, statistics, and mathematics in politics, society, and the arts.

What to Expect in this Course

You must log into the Math 100 Canvas shell. If you do not log in to Canvas and do the required assignments due in the first week classes of the semester or contact the instructor via email to share that you’re having issues with accessing Canvas by the required date and time, you may be dropped from the course. If you are not active during the semester for longer than one week, you may be dropped from the course. However, it is your responsibility to officially drop the course.

You will be expected to keep up with the course by watching lecture videos (while taking notes), completing an online worksheet for each lesson (up to three attempts), doing regular assignments/exercises, and submitting all required homework, projects, exams, and other work as assigned. I will provide weekly updates in brief videos.

Every student is expected to make serious time commitment for this course every week, including about 3 hours for watching lecture videos, 2 hours for completing online lesson worksheets, and many additional hours for learning the material and doing homework (individually or in online study groups). A homework set is due for every chapter. More time may be needed for course projects as well as exam preparation.

A typical weekly schedule: watch lecture videos while taking lesson notes, complete an online worksheet for each lesson, do book exercises from the sections covered. During a week when you have an exam, you watch review videos, try a practice test, review your homework, and then take the real exam online. You will have to scan and upload your paper to “show your work” (SYW) on each exam.

[Technology Requirements] Be sure you have reliable Internet access as you will spend a lot of time in Canvas. In addition, you will need a scientific calculator for some exercises and exams. Your phone or PC may already have one. You will also need either a scanning app (e.g. Genius Scan, PDF Scanner, CamScanner) or a scanner/printer so that you can create multi-page PDF files for Canvas submission.

Types of Assessments

Regular assignments (exercises from the book), online worksheets, course project, discussion boards, three exams, and a comprehensive final.  Each exam will be taken online with a requirement to submit your work as a PDF file immediately after the online component.
