Introduction
Hi Everyone, this is Dilip Purohit and I will be your instructor for Math 140 - Introductory Statistics. This is a 4-unit course in transfer-level mathematics, designed especially for students whose academic program does not require calculus. This should serve as your terminal (last) mathematics course.
As an instructor, I want to help you succeed and learn statistics in an easy manner. It is important that you attend every class and make sincere efforts to learn the material. The emphasis will be on critical thinking and understanding of the concepts. You will need to keep it quite simple - stay engaged, ask questions, and complete assignments on time. The assignments will be like problems that would be solved in class. If there is any difficulty, please ask questions and I will be happy help.
I will send an email to the class one week prior to the start date with additional information.
Course Description
Math 140 examines statistical methods including collecting data, bias, experimental design, exploratory data analysis, regression, probability, sampling and theoretical distributions, population estimations, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, categorical and quantitative association tests. We will use computer based statistical software (Statcrunch) and basic calculator to solve problems.
What to Expect in this Course
You should attend the first-class meeting via Zoom on the scheduled date.
You will be expected to keep up with the course by attending lectures live (while taking notes), learning how to use stacrunch to solve statistical problems, doing classwork assignments, submitting homework assignments, and finally, taking all the exams including the final.
A typical weekly schedule:
Attend lecture either on zoom or in person. Make sincere efforts to learn the material. Complete classwork and homework assignments. If you need to review the material again, I will be happy to provide you class recordings again.
Time Commitment:
Every student is expected to make a time commitment for this course every week. Besides attending synchronous meetings on zoom or in person, you should set aside time
for completing homework assignments, and some additional hours for learning the material. You are expected to submit homework assignments every week and classwork assignments during class time. Classwork assignments will be problems similar to problems that I will be doing in class.
Technology Requirements
Be sure you have reliable Internet access as you will spend a lot of time in Canvas. In addition, you will need a basic calculator to solve problems in class or at the time of tests. Your phone and PC may already have one. You will also need either a scanning app (e.g., Genius Scan, PDF Scanner, CamScanner) or a scanner/printer so that you can create multi-page PDF files for Canvas submission. ·
Assignments will be submitted through Canvas. The computer must have speakers, webcam, and microphone, StatCrunch access and basic calculator. At the time of taking tests, your webcam must be turned on.
Types of Assessments
Classwork Assignments:
I will be doing several problems in class and then will ask you to do similar problems in class during our meeting time. You will be expected to complete those problems and turn them in either in Canvas or in person. Classwork will be worth 15% of your grade.
Homework Assignments:
I will be assigning homework at the end of every week and you will be expected to submit homework the following week either in canvas or in person. Homework will be worth 15% of your grade.
Tests:
There will be 2 tests worth 50% of your grade. Tests will be hosted on canvas and proctored via zoom during the scheduled class time.
Final Exam:
The final exam is cumulative and will be worth 20% of your grade. It will be given on the last synchronous meeting of the course and proctored via zoom during the scheduled class time.
Textbook Information
Introductory Statistics - Exploring the World Through Data (3rd edition) (e-book) - Robert Gould, Rebecca Wong, Colleen Ryan. (This will be an e-book version). Please do not buy a hard copy of the book. You can buy the e-book at the college bookstore. I will provide you the instructions regarding how to access StatCrunch during our 1st meeting.
