Introduction
Hello. Here is a little background on me. Officially my first name is William but I go by Bill. I was raised by medical missionary parents in Congo, Central Africa. My classmates in the boarding school I attended were from all over the world so I had an unusual and multi cultural upbringing. Along the way I learned to speak French and two dialects from Congo, Lingala and Kituba. Upon graduation from high school I moved back to my home state of California to attend university. I received my undergraduate degree from The Berklee College of Music (Boston) in Professional Music and then did a Master’s in Jazz Performance at San Diego State University. I have been a professional musician for over 40 years and have recorded and toured extensively with my band Native Vibe. Native Vibe plays all original African/Latin jazz fusion music. I also play other styles like blues, rock, pop, soul and other styles of World music. Much of what shapes me as a music teacher was learned from playing those styles in all different kinds of bands. I also learned from the ground up the Music Business. I have my own record label and publishing company and continue to perform and record in Southern California.
Over the course of my career I have played 50's, 60's 70's, 80's, 90's 2000s and current pop songs so I really enjoy this opportunity for you to explore these styles and important artists and bands!!!
Course Description
This course explores the rise of rock and roll as a modern musical genre and examines its place in modern society. The course covers the musical roots of Rock and it's stylistic development over the decades.
What to Expect in this Course
This course will be in the remote/distance learning format where we meet each week on Monday Wednesday at the designated class time via zoom. During class time I will provide a lecture and we will listen and discuss audio examples and watch pertinent videos. In canvas there is a chapter by chapter study guide that students should do their best to fill out during the class meeting. Students are also expected to read each chapter of the textbook that we will cover during the semester. Every 3 chapters will have an exam. No midterm or final exam. Additionally in teams assigned by the instructor you will work on two different slide presentations outlined in the syllabus.

Assessments are based on two group projects and 4 exams over the course of the semester

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health.
