I am Maral Markarian, your instructor for this course. I have been teaching at College of the Canyons for over seven years in the CAWT department as well as Continuing Education. Online learning could be a little intimidating for some, especially if one is not comfortable using computers. However, this has not stopped students in the past to try and succeed. We have had a lot of good times together in the past while learning about computers and Microsoft Applications. I hope to have another great term with you. I am looking forward to seeing you all online on the Canvas ZOOM screen.

Course Description

This course introduces Word application basics. 

This course will be conducted onlineLIVE. Please check the schedule of classes for course start and end dates. This information is available when you are registering for the course, and also available on the home screen of Canvas. 

In order to take this class, you must have a computer (Windows 7 or higher), access to the Internet, a browser such as Google Chrome, the ability to send/receive e-mail (strictly through student e-mail), and Office 365 (available for free download from the College of the Canyons).

Students must have Office 365 downloaded on their computers before the first session of class. 

This course is conducted strictly on PC. NO Apple computers, MacBook, iPad, Chromebook etc. - ONLY PC.  

What to Expect in this Course

We will be discussing the functionality of Word application. Lecturing and learning process is by doing projects together. You will have a quiz and/or assignment at the end of each session and a project at the end of the course. All quizzes/assignments and final project must be submitted by the due dates set by the instructor in Canvas. 

Types of Assessments

Computer tasks/projects/quizzes to be completed as assigned by the instructor and submitted by their corresponding due dates. 


Textbook Information

No textbook is used in this course. All topics/tasks discussed during class will be available in Canvas Modules. It is the students' responsibility to read and study the material presented in Canvas Modules. Canvas will be reached through CanyonsID, or through the College Website. Canvas will be open on the morning of the first day of class.

On the first day of class:

  1. Log into Canvas
  2. Log into your CanyonsID. You will be automatically logged into Canvas.
  3. On the left panel, click on Courses.
  4. Click on All Courses.
  5. Click on your NC CAWT 10B course.
  6. Read the home page carefull.
  7. Record the class meeting dates.  
  8. Follow the instructions to join the Zoom meeting. 
  9. Wait until the instructor admits you into the ZOOM meeting.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
