Introduction

Welcome to NCESL 3A!! My goal is to help you learn to build upon your language skills.This course will require 100% attendance for improvement of language skills.In addition, you must complete discussion, quizzes and attend online Zoom classes Mondays, Tuesday and Thursdays 6pm-9pm starting February 5, 2024 to March 28, 2024. It is strongly recommended you take the End of Level Assessment in Canvas the last week of the course and passing with 70% to continue on to NCESL 3B.

Course Description

Intermediate-high level grammar, writing, speaking and listening with cultural lessons will be covered in this course. 

What to Expect in this Course

You will receive the Zoom course link 7 days before the beginning of class in your COC student email(Outlook) and in Canvas which you can access through Canyons ID Student. You need to create a student email account if you do not already have one. In addition, you will need a reliable laptop and microphone with stable Internet connection. Course assignments, homework and quizzes will be on Canvas and will require independent and group collaboration. Expect to spend 1 hour at least a week on Canvas. We will meet on Zoom in a live class Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 6pm-9pm from February 8, 2024-March 28,2024 - excluding holidays. Please log into your Canyons ID Student account and click on Office 365 to access your Outlook mail or accept our Canvas shell for NCESL 3A click in "Announcements" to access ZOOM link for class. 

Please connect on a laptop or computer, not a phone or tablet as all features of Zoom such as screen sharing and chat will not be available on those devices and will limit active participation in Zoom breakout rooms/class.

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

Online Counseling

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
