Hello and Welcome! My name is Tanya Paraon and I will be your instructor on the exciting Journey through the math topic of rates and proportions numbers. I am a College of the Canyons Alumni and have been working within the college for 17 years. I have been teaching Non Credit courses for the past 6 years and am excited for the expansion of the Math course for years to come. I have a passion for math and a passion to teach math and inspire those that may not like math.
Here’s a brief preview of what you will learn in this course, and the topics that will be covered.
Introduces methods of solving problems involving rates, proportions, and other applications.
Section 1: Ratios and rates
Section 2: Proportions
Section 3: Converting units—U.S.
Section 4: Converting units—metric
Section 5: Temperature scales
What to Expect in this Course
Here are the activities you can expect to engage in during a semester in your class. The course is self paced and done at your own time 100% online through Canvas. The full course is expected to take you 6 to 10 hours to complete. This course has 5 sections that it will cover within the topic of Rates and Proportions.
For each section you will be provided with text, links to websites, and videos that will teach you about the topic in the section and model examples for you. Then you will be expected to complete an assignment to demonstrate your understanding of the topic. For the assignment you will have multiple opportunities for accuracy. Each assignment is to be completed before moving on to the next section.
At the end of the course there is a cumulative test for you to demonstrate your understanding of the Course topic of Rates and Proportions as a whole.
Lastly there is an optional project that aligns with Rates and Proportions in a real world application. This project is optional to be completed if you choose to.
This is a non-credit course. Upon the completion of the course, you will be given either a Pass (P) or a No-Pass (NP) grade. Passing this course indicates that you have met the student learning outcomes.

Online assignments to check for understanding at the end of each section and one online test at the end of the course done on Canvas using MyOpenMath program.

Other Relevant Course Information
This course is the fifth course in the sequence of noncredit developmental mathematics modules designed to prepare and provide support for transfer-level mathematics and science courses. Complete of NC.Math 004, 005, and 006 result in a certificate. We strongly encourage you to strive toward passing this course and all other Math Skills courses you take. If you earn a passing grade in all courses associated with a certificate you can earn a certificate of completion and digital badge! This will increase your value to future employers, give you something to show for all your hard work, and strengthen your resume and/or LinkedIn profile! - Complete all assignments
- Complete the Final Check for Understanding
Students can register into the course at any time up to the semester’s add deadline. The course is self paced. To be successful in the course students should complete the work within a total time of 6 to 10 hours. Complete the work without distractions and in manageable chunks of time. Suggested to complete one section a day spending 1.5 to 2 hours on each section. You do not need to be a mathematician to be successful in math. This course is a great place to start to help you gain those math skills and knowledge back.
Please be aware that I am obligated to use the College of the Canyons attendance policy in this course. To show you are actively engaged in this class, you must complete the first discussion board assignment by the end of the day on Tuesday, August 31 or you will be dropped from the class. Additionally, you will need to complete at least one other assignment by Saturday, September 4 or you will be dropped from the class. If at any point in the first week of class you think you will have any issues meeting these deadlines, please contact me as soon as possible.
