Introduction

Welcome to HLHSCI-101 Introduction to Health and Health Care Careers! My name is Alyssa, and I'm excited to be your instructor for this course. I'm a public health professional with a passion for health equity, community health, and improving access to care. Throughout my career, I've worked in both nonprofit organizations and the government sector on public health issues including cardiovascular disease, food insecurity, HIV, tuberculosis, and mental health.

So, you're interested in learning about careers in health care? You're in the right place. In this 8-week hybrid course, we will explore the U.S. healthcare system and the many professions that make it work. You'll also hear directly from healthcare professionals as they share their career journeys, experiences, and advice, giving you valuable insight into the field.

Whether you're interested in becoming a health care provider or working in a related field, understanding the different roles within the healthcare team is essential. I hope this course helps you explore your interests and prepares you for your future career. I look forward to learning with you this semester!
