Introduction

Welcome to Psyc C1000! I look forward to introducing you to the exciting world of psychology in this class. My own educational degrees include:

• a Ph.D. in Psychology (with a focus in Cognition and Instruction)

• a Master's degree in Counseling

• a Master's degree in Higher Educational Administration, and 

• a Bachelor's degree in Political Science. 

I share this with you so that you can see the various majors and pathways toward a career. I am here to help you and it is an honor to be a part of your academic journey. I encourage you to communicate any and all concerns with me as soon as possible. If I don’t know that there is a problem, I won't be able to help you. If you have an extenuating circumstance (something that is beyond your control) that is hindering your success in this class, please let me know so that we can discuss your options.

Course Description

PSYC C1000 is an introduction to psychology, which is the study of the mind and behavior. Students focus on theories and concepts of biological, cognitive, developmental, environmental, social, and cultural influences; their applications; and their research foundations.

Prerequisites: None

Transferability: CSU, UC

What to Expect in this Course

This is a 100% ONLINE course with no in-person meetings required. In this class, it is expected that you complete all assignments online (including but not limited to lectures, videos, discussions, quizzes, and projects) using COC's course management system, CANVAS. 

In order to participate in this class, you must have access to a computer, internet services, and a web cam or scanner. We will be utilizing photo/video devices and/or online audio devices so that you can post recordings, videos, and/or photos as part of your assignments when needed. All communication is through CANVAS announcements, email, and/or discussion boards.

Types of Assessments

During the term, you will be completing the following activities:

• Discussion boards: You will interact through online discussions with classmates related to the topic being discussed.
• Individual homework assignments and projects: Covering course material, handouts, online research, and assessments that allow you to apply what you have learned.
• Quizzes: taken online, not timed.

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

Online Counseling

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
