Introduction

Hello and welcome to PHYSIC 110: General Physics I at College of the Canyons!  The purpose of this page is to help get you started in the class.  There are lots of components to the class and several types of assignments to submit.  Hopefully, you will find that it all comes together logically and clearly.

Course Objectives (Student Learning Outcomes)

Lecture. 1. Solve problems using Newton's laws, the principles of energy conservation, and laws of thermodynamics, to problems involving motion, heat, and waves.

Lab 1. Formulate appropriate conclusions based on physical data obtained by conducting

experiments using instruments to examine the principles of motion, heat, and waves.

Lecture Content

The lecture content of the course will be taken from the book. Topics include:

  • Vectors and scalars
  • Particle kinematics
  • Newton's laws of motion
  • Statics and dynamics
  • Work and energy
  • Momentum and angular momentum
  • Gravitation
  • Simple harmonic motion
  • Wave motion and sound
  • Fluid mechanics
  • The laws of thermodynamics
  • The behaviors of ideal gasses
  • The kinetic theory
  • Heat engines

Course Description

Presents a non-calculus-based introductory study of Newtonian mechanics, the conservation of energy, momentum, and angular momentum, including topics in vibrational motion, waves, and fluid mechanics. Designed for students majoring in the life sciences or any other major requiring a non-calculus based physics course. UC credit limitation: PHYSICS 110-111, and 220-221-222 combined, maximum credit one series. Prerequisite: Math 102.

What to Expect in this Course

The class will be a mix of OnlineLive components (Lecture) and asynchronous components (Lab). OnlinLive meetings will be every Monday and Wednesday from 05:30PM and run approximately 120-180 minutes. Attendance will be mandatory to those meetings. During these OnlineLive meetings we will have lecture highlights, quizzes, and recitations. You should be able to find all the Lecture material (lecture videos and notes) already posted on Canvas (which will be open about a week before the class starts), and by following the schedule in the syllabus you can then use them to study the material.

Pre-recorded video of the lectures should be your PRIMARY resource for learning the material, with the textbook used mostly for a reference. Mastering Physics subscription will be required for homework assignments, quizzes, and exams.

Tuesdays and Thursdays are reserved for completion of the lab assignments, done asynchronously. Pivot Interactives will be used for most, if not all lab assignments.

There will be two 45 minutes office hours during the week conducted via Zoom. It is upmost importance that you watch those pre-recorded video lectures (you can follow the schedule in the Syllabus), and please take it upon yourself to ask me questions in class, via email or during the office hour when something is not understood.

The videos are lengthy (60-90 minutes) since they mirror the classroom lecture, but please try to give yourself breaks so you do not zone out and miss important topics.

Types of Assessments

1. Mastering Physics HW for every chapter

2. Bi-weekly Quizzes

3. Bi-weekly Recitations

4. Bi-weekly Labs

5. The Midterm Exams

6. Final Exam

Textbook Information

Pre-recorded video of the lectures should be your PRIMARY resource for learning the material, with the textbook used mostly for a reference. Mastering Physics subscription will be required for homework assignments, quizzes, and exams.

The official class textbook, though will be used mainly as a reference source

Pearson College Physics, Knight, 4th Ed. Also required: Mastering Physics access

Mastering Physics access code will be required though for HW assignments. Can be purchased with the textbook or separately.

You can however use the OER Physics textbook as a reference

OpenStax Physics
