Introduction

Hello, my name is Cecillia Barron and I earned my B.A. and MA in Sociology from CSUN. In addition to teaching here at COC, I teach in the Sociology and Criminology departments at CSUN. I was a probation officer for L.A. County for some years prior to becoming a professor and have loved every minute of both careers! My research interests are many, but I specialize in sociological and criminological theory, juvenile delinquency, as well as gender. I wrote my Master's thesis on transgender children and their families, using qualitative research methods, with the goal of giving them a voice. When I'm not "doing" academics, I'm playing with my dogs:-)

Course Description

Sociology 200 provides an overview of the academic field of women's studies and gendered issues, including the social and cultural consequences of living in a "gendered world." Socialization, communication, politics, crime, sexuality, and religion are examined, as well as the historical and cross-cultural aspects of gender relationships.

What to Expect in this Course

This course is completely online; therefore, all work will occur on Canvas, which you can find through the COC website. We will NOT meet in person, nor will we meet remotely. Please understand, this class is occurring during Summer, therefore you will be taking-in a lot of information per week (the class is in fact a semester's worth of information in a short amount of time). Please ensure you have logged into Canvas (https://coc.instructure.com) no later than day two of the term; if you do not you will be DROPPED from this course. Please ensure that you are able to accommodate yourself to the confines of online learning. This means not only reading online, a computer with internet access, but the desire and self motivation to actively participate and learn. You must be able to login at least every other day to keep up with class discussions (both your own and your classmates) as well as keep up with the readings. Just because this class is online does not mean it is easier. Please ensure you fully understand what this means before attempting this class. If you have questions on this you can email me for clarification or go onto the COC website and you can find information there about online learning.

Having said all that, this class will be interesting and exercise your critical thinking skills. You will learn a lot of highly relevant ideas that directly apply to your everyday life that you were completely unaware of. Remember to keep an open-mind:)

Types of Assessments

You can expect to take quizzes, have plenty of discussions, and various sorts of other potential assignments (this will be decided based on the ebb and flow of class), such as, "film analysis", short essay's on various topics (for example, a current event relevant to Women and Gender Studies), group work, etc.
