Chloe McGinley

Hello and Welcome! If this is your first online class, or your first time taking a class with me, please take the time to read through this letter and watch the video below so you can know what to expect, and be prepared for success! The first thing I’d like prospective students to know about this course is all work will be completed online, asynchronously without any required live class meetings. I have designed this online course to be both engaging and challenging, with interactive assignments and activities. I will be in the course with you, responding to your questions, clarifying concepts, offering feedback and sharing resources. I will send an email with additional information, including the course syllabus, one week prior to the start of class so you will have time to plan your schedule and coordinate assignments and due dates with any other classes you are taking, and your family/ work obligations. I look forward to exploring this topic with you, and getting to know you throughout the coming semester. If you have any questions after reading this letter, please feel free to email me.

Course Description

What to Expect in this Course

Here is information about what this course will be about, and a quick preview of my teaching style, so you can get an idea of what you’ll be learning. Also, here’s a brief explanation about the workload required to be successful in this course. Students will be expected to participate on a weekly basis and keep up with weekly course assignments. Please note that online coursework requires students to have a higher level of self-motivation, discipline and time management skills to be successful. I will include some helpful resources for time management

Types of Assessments

Here is a brief description of the type of activities you can expect to engage in during a semester in this class: discussion boards, individual and group projects, quizzes, and a final project. I will not have any proctored exams. Instead, I will assess your understanding of the concepts through weekly writing assignments and a final project at the end of the semester. Especially for new-to-online-learning students, it can be important to emphasize that this is not a “learn at your own pace” course. You should expect to log into Canvas at least three times each week to participate in discussions with your classmates, submit assignments, access course readings, and review feedback and read announcements from me, your instructor.

Textbook Information

Good news! There is no textbook to purchase for this class, as we will use a Zero Textbook Cost (ZTC) online book, available at www.canyons.edu/ztc. I will also include links to reading material and multi-media to watch inside of Canvas.

Other Relevant Course Information

One week prior to the start of class you will be able to access our course in Canvas. There, you will find an Orientation Module that will help you find your way around. To participate in orientation module and in the course, you need a computer or device with reliable internet access. The device should be able to play videos on the screen and audio through headphones or speakers. You also need access to a device that can record sound through a microphone and take photos and videos, as you will create and post media in one or more course assignments. The camera on your computer, tablet, or mobile device should be an appropriate tool for this purpose.

I will also send an email with additional information to all enrolled, including the course syllabus, one week prior to the start of class so you will have time to plan your schedule and coordinate assignments and due dates with any other classes you are taking, and your family/ work obligations. I look forward to exploring this topic with you, and getting to know you throughout the coming semester. If you have any questions please feel free to email me.
