Biography: Lina Boulos is a registered Civil Professional Engineer in the State of California. She earned a Bachelors in Civil Engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada, and a Masters in Pure and Applied Sciences from Polytechnique University of Montreal, Canada. Lina is an author of several papers published in peer-reviewed journals. Lina worked in the consulting field for several years. She was hired by Montgomery Watson Harza (MWH) as a project engineer in the Applied Research Department and worked on several projects involving water quality, drinking water regulations and permits, water treatment processes such as ion-exchange, advanced oxidation, and membrane treatment. Later, she was hired by Carollo Engineers as a project manager, and worked with big clients such as LADWP, CLWA and MWD to to solve their water quality issues. Lina founded her company L Boulos Consulting Inc in 2008 and continues to juggle work projects and family. Lina is also a mother of two girls, ages 12 and 14. In her spare time, Lina enjoys yoga, reading, traveling, and volunteering at her kids' school.

Course Description

 In this class you will develop a general understanding of the basic principles and techniques of the conventional surface water treatment processes including coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and filtration, plus those of disinfection processes. This course also will assist you in preparation for Grade T1 and T2 Water Treatment Plant Operator’s Certificate examination given by the State Water Resources Control Board Division of Drinking Water (DDW).

What to Expect in this Course

Course Format:

Water Treatment 150 is offered as a remote/distance education class with lectures on Wednesdays and online assignments during the week.

 

Class Start and End Dates:

 This course starts on Wednesday, August 25, 2021 and ends on Saturday, October 16, 2021.

 

Lecture: The lecture portion of the course will be offered on Wednesday evenings from 6:00pm – 9:05pm. You will join the lecture synchronously using Zoom through your Canvas shell. The Zoom login information will be provided to all of the students enrolled in the course and available under Zoom tab in the class Canvas shell. Additionally, all of the lectures will be recorded and the links will be posted in the course Learning Management System (LMS), Canvas shell customized for this course. Whiteboard slides will also be saved and sent to students.

Key Dates: To be successful in this course you will need to attend the lecture class meetings via Zoom.  You will need to log on every Wednesday at 6:00 p.m. to attend the lectures and remain active until it ends.  If you do not show up or log online at the first lecture on August 25, you will be dropped as a No-Show, unless I hear from you. In addition to the 3-hour Zoom meeting, the course will require an average of 3-4 hours per week for completing homework, reviewing class material, and responding to discussion forums. You should also plan on frequently checking your email and Canvas. Homework assignments will be made available at 9:05 pm, following the lecture, and will be due by Sunday at midnight. The tests will be made available online from 6:00 pm on Wednesday to midnight Sundays. Quizzes and exams are taken online.

 

Course Material, Quizzes and Exams: Canvas will be used as the LMS for this course. You will find all of the course materials, homework assignments, quizzes, exams, grades, any supplemental resource material, etc., and Zoom information posted in Canvas. To login, please visit https://coc.instructure.com. Your username will consist of lastname_first name initial and the student default password is “student”.  I will also be creating discussion boards on a regular basis to discuss a certain topic area not covered in class or to supplement discussion from a class lecture. The Canvas classroom will not be available until the official start of the semester.  If you haven’t used Canvas previously or want a refresher, please visit the guides. We will be using a web conferencing/meeting platform vias Canvas called Zoom to give increased options to meet/increase the accessibility/for groups/lecture.
