Industry Certification

College of the Canyons also offers several programs in Welding Technology that can lead to a Certificate and/or Degree. Many of these programs are aligned with an industry sector and a specific process. Graduates of these programs acquire the necessary skills and knowledge to pursue earning industry welding certifications.

College of the Canyons (COC) has been conducting welder certification testing for well over 30-years. COC is affiliated the two most prevalent agency affiliations and therefore offers certification testing for both the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) and The American Welding Society (AWS). COC also provides certification testing in accordance with The American Society of Mechanical Engineers and The American Petroleum Institute.

Welding certification exams assess a welder’s ability to make a high-quality weld that passes a given acceptance criteria. The specific welding tests vary based on the welding code, welding process, type of material & thickness, welding position, etc. The tests are conducted by a certified welding inspector who will determine the results gained from nondestructive and/or destructive testing methods.

Most welding certification requires only successful completion of a welding performance test. However, the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety requires not only successful completion of a welding performance exam, but also completion of a department (written) exam. Individuals must pass both the department and performance exams to earn the actual welding certification.
