Workers' Compensation

California law guarantees certain benefits to employees who are injured or become ill because of their jobs.  Below are the steps to take in case of a work related injury.

What to do in case of an injury?

 Major Injury - Emergency Medical Attention Sought

  1. Call 911 for emergency transportation.  The injured employee will be transported to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital Do not move or transport an injured employee to a medical facility in a personal vehicle.  Only emergency medical services (EMS) can transport the injured employee to a health care facility.
    • Examples of an injury or illness that might require immediate medical attention are: loss of consciousness; head, neck or spinal cord injury; seizure; chest pain; amputation; difficulty breathing; severe vomiting; severe burns; uncontrollable bleeding.
  2. Call the switchboard by dialing "7" for Valencia Campus or "77" Canyon Country Campus.  The switchboard will direct emergency personnel to the exact location.
  3. Report to immediate supervisor and Human Resources.  Call Lauren Elan Helsper in Human Resources at 661-362-5427 or Rian Medlin (backup) at 661-362-3426.
  4. Immediately following an injury and/or illness, please contact our Company Nurse Injury Hotline at 1-877-518-6702.  The Search Code is QS034.  Employer: Santa Clarita Community College District.  They are available 24 hours a day.
  5. Employee and supervisor must complete the forms to the right and return to Human Resources immediately.  The Workers' Compensation Claim form and Employee Accident Investigation Report must be returned to the Human Resources Office in order to process a claim for workers' compensation benefits.

Minor Injury - Requiring Non-Emergency Medical Attention

  1. Report to immediate supervisor and Lauren Elan Helsper.  For injuries reported after normal business hours (8am-5pm), call our Company Nurse Injury Hotline at 1-877-518-6702.
    • Examples of minor injuries are: sprain or strain to muscles that resulted from a slip and fall, abrasions, fracture, contusion, chipped tooth, needle stick.
  2. Send the injured person directly to Human Resources, if possible. 
  3. The employee will be sent for medical care on campus at The Student Health & Wellness Center and/or off campus at:
    • Exer Urgent Care - Located near Canyon Country and Valencia
    • AFC Urgent Care - Located near Canyon Country
    • Concentra - Located near Canyons Country and Valencia
    • Personal physician (if pre-designated)
  4. Immediately following an injury and/or illness, please contact our Company Nurse Injury Hotline at 1-877-518-6702.  The Search Code is QS034.  Employer: Santa Clarita Community College District.  They are available 24 hours a day.  If transportation is needed, Company Nurse can schedule transportation.  
  5. Employee and supervisor must complete the forms to the right and return to Human Resources immediately.  The Workers' Compensation Claim form and Employee Accident Investigation Report must be returned to the Human Resources Office in order to process your claim for workers' compensation benefits.

No Medical Attention Sought or Employee Refuses Treatment

  1.  Report to immediate supervisor and supervisor will contact Lauren Elan Helsper in Human Resources for documentation purposes.
