Course Repetition

The registration system will prevent you from repeating a course that is currently in progress, one in which you have received a passing grade, or if you have exceeded the repeat limit. A course may not be repeated for credit or for grade point average improvement if a grade of C or better has been earned. Any exception to this regulation must be approved by petition prior to registration. Courses in which you have previously earned a substandard grade (D, F, FW, NC, or NP) may be repeated unless otherwise indicated by course descriptions found in the current college catalog or through the Search for Sections function via My Canyons.

Course Repeats

The California Community Colleges Board of Governors passed a regulation to limit the amount of times a student can enroll in a course. Effective Summer 2012, students are limited to the amount of times they can enroll in one type of course. For example, if you are taking Math 070, and you receive a substandard grade (D, F, FW, or NP) or a Withdrawal (W) the first time you take it, you will be allowed to enroll in the course again. If you receive a substandard grade (D, F, FW, or NP) or a Withdrawal (W) the second time you take it, you will be allowed to enroll in the course only one more time. The third time you enroll in the course will be the last time you will be able to enroll in the course.

Example 1:

College of the Canyons can only forgive 2 grades when you repeat a course. The last grade stands in your GPA. (Please note: a Withdrawal does not give forgiveness to a substandard grade.)

Withdrawals

In Summer 2012, the withdrawal deadlines changed. The drop without a W deadline is the same day as the add deadline for all courses. For full semester length classes, the drop without a W deadline will be the Friday of the second week of school.

The drop with a W deadline has also changed. The drop with a W deadline has changed to the 12th week of classes for full semester length courses. For short term classes, the deadline is at 75% of the course. This gives you more time to decide how you are performing in a course before making the determination to drop with a W on your transcript.

A withdrawal on your transcript has another implication on your educational record now. The withdrawal will count in the number of times you are allowed to repeat a course. It will be combined with substandard grades to limit the number of enrollments you can have for one course. Effective summer 2012, students are now limited in the amount of times he or she can enroll in one type of course.

The withdrawal on your transcript will count towards your progress for academic standing and for financial aid.

You may find the petition to repeat a course on the Forms page.  The required Repeat Video is found at this link and is used in cases where you are attempting to take a class for the third time:  https://youtu.be/T5gE3ilbkHo

After completing your Repeat Petition, you may email it to repeats@canyons.edu.
