Federal Work-Study
The Federal Work-Study program offers on-campus part-time employment to qualified students. The program is need based, and is a type of "self-help" financial aid that must be earned through work. The average annual award is $4000; however, the award amount will vary based on the student's financial need.
Federal Work-Study Eligibility Requirements
To be eligible for the Federal Work-Study program, a student must:
- Submit the Free Application for Federal Student (FAFSA);
- Be a US citizen or eligible non-citizen;
- Have a valid Social Security number;
- Have unmet financial need;
- Meet the Academic Standards with a cumulative 2.00 GPA and satisfactory unit progress;
- Be enrolled at least half-time status at College of the Canyons (6 units or more);
- Have an Award Notification Letter indicating FWS funds for the current academic year.
Federal Work-Study Deadline
Federal Work-Study funds are awarded to students on-going on a first-come, first-serve basis, and are restricted by available federal funding limits. Funds are limited, apply early!

Here’s how to get started at College of the Canyons:
- Self Check: Students must meet ALL the Federal Work-Study (FWS) Eligibility Requirements, listed above.
- Verify: Confirm with the Financial Aid Office if you are eligible for Federal Work-Study (FWS).
- Apply: Complete the SEED application (Student Employment Eligibility Database) on the Student Employment website.
- Explore: Check the list of available Federal Work-Study job openings on the Student Employment Website, if any.
- Reach Out: Contact the supervisors for any position you would like to apply for using the contact information listed on the job postings.
- What's Next?: When available and needed, the supervisors for the respective positions will review applications and reach out if you are selected for an interview. All hiring decisions are based on departmental needs, your availability, and your eligibility.
- Got an Offer?: If offered a position, please visit the Financial Aid Office. Federal Work-Study funding (if available) will be awarded based on your financial need and expected work hours.
- Got Awarded FWS?: If awarded Federal Work-Study and offered an employment opportunity at COC, you and your supervisor must notify the Student Employment Office. At this point, you will start the new hire process.
