ESL 091 ACCENT REDUCTION (4 Units)


Focuses on accent reduction for non-native speakers of English. Course covers production of vowels, consonants, stress, rhythm, intonation. Offered pass/no-pass only (Units do not apply to the associate degree ) 

Student Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course, students should be able to: 

1. reproduce English-language phonemes, basic stress and intonation in formal and informal situations and
2. recognize first-language interference in individual speech and adopt strategies to minimize it.

 

Course Objectives

1. Identify individual pronunciation problems.
2. Correct individual pronunciation problems.
3. Identify American vowels and their particular sounds, know tongue placement and be able to produce vowel sounds.
4. Identify American consonants and their particular sounds, know tongue placement and be able to reproduce sounds.
5. Speak with correct American intonation, recognize and correct incorrect intonation.
6. Speak with correct stress, identify incorrect stress in speaking and make corrections.
7. Identify accent limitations from native language and correct them.
8. Speak in a comprehensible, reduced accent in both short and extended situations.
9. Mark sentences for important syllables, words, phrases.
