Introduction

Course Description

Examines the principles and practices of public speaking, communication theory, and techniques for public speaking. Includes speech organization, development, research, audience analysis, reasoning, and presentation skills for the development of informative and persuasive speeches.   

What to Expect in this Course

The skills you acquire in this class are designed to foster growth in your own speaking abilities, but that is contingent on the work you put into your speeches and the assignments. Here are the skills you will develop over the course of the semester:

 

  1. Compare and contrast the process of communication, including the speaker, message, channel, listener, feedback, and noise.
  2. Evaluate the importance of communication theory and public discourse in society.
  3. Explain ethical responsibilities in public speaking.
  4. Evaluate the barriers to effective listening and methods to overcome ineffective listening.
  5. Analyze an audience using demographic, situational, and psychological characteristics.
  6. Compare and contrast the use of effective and ineffective language.
  7. Demonstrate proficiency in methods and techniques of delivery, such as extemporaneous and impromptu speaking.
  8. Utilize various patterns of speech arrangement, including chronological, topical, spatial, cause-effect, statement of reasons, problem-solution, and Monroe’s Motivated Sequence.
  9. Analyze evidence and assess methods of reasoning for informative and persuasive speeches.
  10. Analyze fallacies in argument.

Textbook Information

The textbook for this course is an OER book that is free of charge. I will provide you with the book. More information will be given on the first day of class.

Other Relevant Course Information

This is a 16 week course. YOU WILL NEED A COMPUTER, OR ACCESS TO ONE. If you do not own a computer, there are numerous resources on campus, such as the TLC or ASG computer lab. You will also need internet access and a webcam. Exams are completely online.

The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Veterans Resource Center
