Introduction
Hello and Welcome to Water 130 - Waterworks Mathematics. My name is Regina Blasberg and I am here to support you! I want you to be successful in this course. If you have any questions or need to reach me, I can be reached at (661) 362-5096 or by email at regina.blasberg@canyons.edu.
This is a HyFlex course. That means each week you’ll be able to attend each class either online via Zoom or in person. The Zoom link to join online will be posted in Canvas.
Course Description
This course covers mathematical principles related to drinking water distribution and treatment systems and wastewater treatment plants; including areas, volumes, pressure, flow rates, unit conversion, chemical dosage, detention time, and filtration rates. The focus is on mathematical computations within the expected range of knowledge on the State Water Resources Control Board exams for Drinking Water Distribution 1 and 2, Drinking Water Treatment 1 and 2, and Wastewater Treatment 1 and 2.
What to Expect in this Course
Whether you choose to attend class in person or via Zoom, you will need to attend class Monday evenings starting at 6:00pm. Additionally, you will need to use Canvas to complete and/or turn in assignments each week. I will use Zoom to record each class meeting and the recording will be available through Canvas shortly after each class meeting. If you would like to join a test meeting in Zoom to make sure you are able to join meetings, go to www.zoom.us/test.
There will be weekly homework assignments designed to help you learn and practice the mathematical concepts covered in class. Homework assignments are graded based on completion and effort and not on correctness. In other words, what’s most important is that you spend time working with the material and trying to figure it out. Remember that if you get stuck, I’m here to help you!
I request that you submit assignments in Canvas as a pdf whenever possible. If you do not have access to a scanner, I recommend downloading and using the free Adobe Scan app (https://acrobat.adobe.com/us/en/acrobat/mobile/scanner-app.html) on your phone. It will allow you to easily convert your work to a pdf for uploading and submitting in Canvas.
Types of Assessments
Your final grade will be based on a variety of assignments including homework, three quizzes (taken in Canvas) and exams. The final exam is cumulative.
Textbook Information
This courses uses a free, OER (Open Educational Resource) textbook. The textbook will be provided in Canvas or you can download it from the COC website.

Other Relevant Course Information
You will need a reliable internet connection, your college email address, and basic computer skills including familiarity with basic windows formats, opening and closing files, sizing windows, starting programs, sending emails, attaching documents, and basic file management skills.

Management of Stress and Mental Health
Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.
Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.
You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.
Veterans Resource Center
The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
