  • How do I access Canyons Connects?

    CANVAS
    Instructions to add Canyons Connects to your Canvas shell: 

    1. Go to each course shell.
    2. Select settings, then navigation, and move Canyons Connects to the course navigation list.
    3. Click Save.

    When you click on Canyons Connects within Canvas, the Canyons Connects dashboard will automatically open.

    SINGLE SIGN-ON (SSO)

    1. Access SSO and log in with your College of the Canyons employee credentials
    2. Select the Canyons Connects tile (Do not select TEST version)

    What messages are sent to students?

    Email templates for flags, kudos, and some referrals are located in the RESOURCES tab.  Personalized, typed comments can be inserted within a specific area of the email as shown in the template.  An exception is the Counseling referral.

    What are flags, referrals, and kudos?

    FLAGS

    A flag is an academic concern which directs the student to contact their instructor. Students receive an email from Canyons Connects when a flag is raised.

    A flag does not immediately result in contact from counselor or other college personnel.  Students will be contacted by the Canyons Connects counselor after three flags are raised from any combination of faculty members within one term.  If you want your student to be contacted by a specific campus resource, you can make a referral.

    Students who belong to a support program may be contacted by support staff when fewer than three flags are raised. 

    Can I raise a flag anonymously?

    No.

    How do I clear a Flag?

    Flags are cleared in one of three ways: 1) When a service provider responds to the flag and manually clears it after resolving the issue or after multiple unsuccessful attempts to contact the student; 2) When the student is no longer enrolled in the course associated with the flag (Note: not all flags are associated with courses); 3) At the end of the term when the Canyons Connects Administrator batch clears flags for the term.

    Do students get informed when a flag is raised and/or cleared?

    Students receive an email from Canyons Connects when a flag is raised.

    There are no specific messages sent to students when a flag is cleared, unless the clearing party specifically sends a custom message to the student. Flags that are displayed on the student dashboard would disappear from the dashboard, once cleared.

    REFERRALS

    Referrals make a connection between the campus resource and the student in need of support.  When a faculty member makes a referral, the campus resource will reach out to the student directly.  Currently, all instructors can refer students to Counseling, the Basic Need Center (BaNC), and the Learning Center (TLC).

    Counselors or staff in the respective support areas will reach out to students directly when a referral is made.

    Will the students see the comments I enter when submitting a referral?

    The students will see instructor comments in a tutoring referral.  They will not see comments in a counseling referral.  It is best practice to write the comment as if the student could read it.

    Can I make an anonymous referral?

    No.

    KUDOS

    Kudos are meant to reinforce positive student behavior and do not generally require further action.

    Can I save a progress survey?

    Can I get a progress survey back if I made a mistake?

    Once a progress survey is submitted, messages are sent to students, and the survey can no longer be edited.

    How do I send feedback when I no longer have access to the progress survey?

    You can submit feedback at any time during the semester using the student tab.

    What information is appropriate to include in progress reporting comments?

    Try to make your comments positive, supportive, and encouraging. It should always be presumed that a student could see the comments. While not all comments are imbedded in the messages sent by Canyons Connects, students may still be able to access that information through other means. NEVER write anything in Canyons Connects that you would not want a student to see.
