Xandr Stack

Xandr Stack, AIA, LEED BD+C, Sr. Associate, HOK

Architecture, 2010

Earning my A.S. in Architectural Drafting at COC laid a strong foundation for my career in architecture. The program taught me core skills in hand-drafting, 3D modeling, and design principles, which gave me a practical understanding of how ideas translate into technical plans. The hands-on and theory-based courses prepared me for advanced studies and ultimately licensure. Most of all, the program and faculty taught me how to approach projects with both creativity and technical precision!

Mayra Trejo

Mayra Trejo, Architectural Designer, NAC Architecture

Architecture, 2012

My time in the Architecture program at College of the Canyons gave me a strong and practical foundation that continues to shape my work today. The coursework provided a solid understanding of architectural software, technical concepts, and sustainable design practices, all of which supported my successful transition to university. Through drafting, model-making, and learning to collaborate effectively, I built the habits and confidence that guide my approach to design. Those early experiences set the groundwork for my professional path in public architecture, where I now design schools. I frequently find myself applying the skills and knowledge that first took root at COC.

With guidance from mentors such as Jason Oliver and Dorothy Minarsch, I transformedinto a top-performing student. Today, I am proud to be working for Gensler, one of the leading architecture firmsin the world cultivating change through the power of design.

COC’s Architecture program was the first place where I felt encouraged to explore my interests and trust my ownvoice as a designer. My experience was shaped by incredible instructors, hands-on site visits, and the chance to collaborate closely with the program. Serving as an architecture tutor gave me a deeper sense of purpose and connection to the field, and it strengthened my confidence in my abilities. The mentorship and opportunities I foundat COC taught me not just how to work in architecture, but why I wanted to become an architect in the first place.

Sean Joyner

Architecture, 2012

College of the Canyons played a pivotal role in shaping my path into architecture. The program introduced me to the discipline through a hands-on, practical approach rooted in making, technical rigor, and craftsmanship, an experience that proved invaluable when I transferred into the B.Arch program at Woodbury University. Equally impactul was the culture at COC where faculty and staff approach teaching with a genuine heart of service and foster an environment of shared growth and collective investment. Since my time at COC, I have worked as a designer in leading architecture firms before transitioning into architectural writing and communications, with work published in The Architect’s Newspaper, ARCHITECT Magazine, Dwell, and Archinect, where I also served as an editor. More recently, I have led brand and communications efforts at firms including Gensler, Perkins&Will, and HNTB. COC was the catalyst that led me on this fulfilling career path.
