Introduction
I am a COC alumna. I have a bachelor's and master's degree in Mathematics (applied math) from UCLA. My husband and I met at UCLA, and we have two sons who are in high school in Santa Clarita. As a family we enjoy hikes/walks, the ocean, and state/national parks. I’ve been teaching at COC for twenty-one years, and was at the Canyon Country Campus for the first ten years after it's opening. You may wish to visit my COC webpage which I will be updating early this summer.
Math 100 is meant for non-STEM and non-Business majors. If you are a business major, you should enroll in Statistics (Math 140), or College Algebra (Math 103) if you already completed statistics. If you are a nursing major planning to obtain a bachelor's degree, our Math 140 Statistics course is recommended over Math 100.
Course Description
The material we cover in Math 100 includes how math is used in politics (apportionment and voting), music (frequency of scales), art (golden ratio, Fibonacci sequence, vanishing point), earthquake measurements, finance (interest on savings accounts and loans) as well as concepts of logic, percentages, probability (counting techniques), basic statistical concepts, and exponential and linear growth.
Math 100 provides you with a 3-unit option to satisfy your math requirement as you transfer to Cal State (CSU Breadth) or UC (IGETC), and you don’t need a specific math course such as statistics or college algebra to graduate with your four-year degree. Other colleges, either in CA or outside CA, may prefer college algebra or statistics. Majors requiring statistics usually include Kinesiology, Economics, Business, and sometimes Psychology, and Sociology depending upon the transfer institution. Please check with a COC counselor.
What to Expect in this Course
Math 100 is expected to take 9 hours per week during a 16-week semester. (3 hours in class + 6 hours outside class = 9) Weekly assignments will include note-taking, lesson mini quizzes, discussion boards, and bookwork exercises. There will be 3 exams and 1 cumulative final exam. There is one project which is a 2-4 page paper based upon on a statistical study article. Writing sentences will also take place within the logic chapter and in the discussion boards.
You should have a laptop/desktop and access to the internet. A microphone, camera, and headphones are helpful, but not required. The microphone will assist you to talk with me and your classmates in zoom and office hours. A chat feature in zoom will allow you to type questions and answers if you do not have a working microphone. For exams, use Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. Use CamScanner or Adobe Scan on your phone to upload pictures of your homework papers and "show your work" papers for exams. Use GoodGrapher on your phone or "scientific calculator online free" in a Google Web browser for access to a scientific calculator for some of our more complicated calculations within the finance chapter. For simpler calculations, the calculator on your phone will be fine. Any phone apps that I mention here should be free; do not pay for them.
I will be using Canvas. You will access the class zoom link through Canvas. I will also send out a class announcement with the zoom link information. Class announcements are sent to your COC email address and any other notification setting you have set up within Canvas.
Types of Assessments
There will be 3 exams and 1 cumulative final exam to be taken within Canvas. I am considering a form of a proctored exam through Canvas. Each exam will contain approximately 10 true/false, 10 multiple choice, and 10 free-response questions. You will upload your "show your work" papers for the free-response questions. You will have approximately 1.5 hours = 90 minutes to complete each exam. You will have only one attempt at each exam. Please share your academic accommodation letter with me during the first week of the semester if you have one.
You will handwrite your bookwork exercises and upload a copy into Canvas. You will have discussion boards, but not every week. More will occur at the beginning of the semester. You will have a paper project. Mini quizzes on the lessons will be allowed three attempts where the highest score counts.
Textbook Information
A new version of our free OER Textbook will be used in the Fall. This will be available in Canvas, on the math department webpage, and in print form from the bookstore for about $5. If you decide to order a printed loose-leaf copy from the bookstore, you will need a 3-ring binder. I recommend ordering the book two weeks prior to the start of the semester if you decide to have a printed copy.
Other Relevant Course Information
For level 1, and possibly level 2, math placements, students should consider the non-credit math classes that are available for free online. Each pass/no pass course is about 10 hours. See the schedule of classes under the category "Noncredit Mathematics." See the math department website for more information. Consider: NC.MATH 004 Percentages, NC.MATH 005 Rates and Proportions, NC.MATH 002 Fractions and Mixed Numbers, NC.MATH 008 Graphs and Lines. (These are available this summer between 7/12 and 8/14 and will be available in the fall too.)
Waitlists: Add codes will not work until the first day of class. I will go in waitlist order as space is available. Please email on the Friday before the first day of classes if you are on the waitlist and are still interested in enrolling in the course. I may also need to email you the zoom link for class if you do not already have access to the course through Canvas.
