Introduction

Welcome to Introduction 2D Animation MEA-118 online. My name is Laura Markarian. This orientation letter is provided to clarify the workload, and learning goals for the course. Because the course is 100 percent online, we will not meet on-campus for the duration of the term. All assignments and meetings will be online. There will be an official schedule published on the 1st day, and you will access this from the online course management system. For COC, we use a software program called Canvas; access to the course is included with your paid registration.

Course Description

This class is an introduction to 2D computer animation. Drawing tools, bitmaps, symbols, layers, and animation will be utilized to create a short 2D animated movie, featuring an animated character.  We will be using the Adobe Animate in the course.  The college will email you instructions on how to download the software a few days before the term begins.

What to Expect in this Course

The course involves using the Adobe Animate software.  We will meet every Tuesday and Thursday at 8:00 am via Zoom meeting.  I will go over instructions of different animation methods we will have Q and A and presentations at each meeting.  The meeting information will also be available on Canvas.  You can reach me via email or if needed I will create a zoom meeting at my office hours or on off days of our meetings to go over projects if needed.  We will have short projects at each meeting demonstrating the use of the new tool or method learned.  The term will end with a Lip sync, character Rig, and creation of a website in Animate.  We will also need the use of Photoshop for some cleanup work.

LECTURE:

  1. Survey and evaluate the various Animate character animation tools and methods.
  2. Compare and contrast various graphic formats and styles.
  3. Distinguish between, and properly use, the different available animation methods.
  4. Apply the principles of animation to plan a 2D digital animation film.
  5. Analyze the practices and methods of audio usage in various narrative settings. IE: Music, Sound effects and voice over.

LAB:

  1. Organize and construct libraries
  2. Create the different types of 2D, digital animation
  3. Construct and animate a character
  4. Create vector based symbols
  5. Utilize the proper audio tools for both synchronous and non-synchronous sound.
  6. Create a narrative sequence.
  7. Rig a Character
  8. Create a Website in Animate

Types of Assessments

This class is an introduction to 2D computer animation. Drawing tools, bitmaps, symbols, layers, and animation will be utilized to create a short 2D animated movie, featuring an animated character.

The course is assessed by completing the weekly projects on time and meeting all requirements. There are no exams, quizzes or papers in this course.

Other Relevant Course Information

Important information

All Required information and instructions will be announced twice a week on the Canvas portal.

There will be a Zoom meeting twice a week for 2.5 hours (regular class time) where the new assignment will be presented, New Strategies and methods of animation will be gone over, handouts will be provided.

There will be 16 assignments a Midterm and Final assignment.  There will not be a quiz or exam in this course.

All course materials for this course are delivered online; your computer and Internet connection should be outfitted for basic online communication to include:

  1. A Mac OS, PC/Windows OS (Windows XP or higher), or Linux OS-based computer;
  2. An Internet connection (broadband speed recommended for video and chat features);
  3. A current web browser (Google Chrome recommended, however, Firefox, Safari, IE 11, should work as well);
  4. Adobe Reader software installed, (this is pdf file viewer to read online articles, available for free from Adobe at: http://get.adobe.com/reader/
  5. Zoom meeting client software installed, at: https://zoom.us/download#client_4meeting
  6. Circumstances may arise which require modifications of the above guidelines and the following schedule of assignments for the course, as deemed necessary. The instructor reserves the right to make necessary changes, in compliance with COC academic policies.

Students that want to add the class after the semester has begun should contact me via e-mail depending on the No Show list if the course is waitlisted.  I will send you an add number which you can use to add the class.  The add number will be given only if the class is waitlisted and there are no shows after 48 hours of term starting, and that also depends on how many no show spots open up.
