Welcome to NCESL 3B! My goal is to help you learn to build upon your language skills.This course will require 100% attendance for improvement of language skills.In addition, you must complete discussion, quizzes and attend online Zoom classes Mondays, Tuesday and Thursdays starting April 8,2024-May 30, 2024 6pm-9pm from via Zoom. It is recommended to take the End of Level Assessment in Canvas the last week of the course and Pass in order to continue on to NCESL 4A.

Course Description

Continues and expands English skills at the Intermediate Low level through listening, speaking, reading and writing including grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, and everyday life situations.

What to Expect in this Course

You will receive the Zoom course link 7 days before the beginning of class in your COC STUDENT EMAIL(Canyons Id-Microsoft Office 365) and in Canvas Inbox, not your personal email. You can access your COC email by logging into Canyons ID Students and clicking Office 365. In addition, you will need a reliable laptop, microphone/speakers, stable Internet connection and be in a quiet place while in Zoom. 

We will meet via Zoom in a live class Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays 6pm-9pm from April 8, 2024 to May 30,2024, excluding holidays see COC 2023-2024 calendar https://www.canyons.edu/administration/pio/2023-24-academic-calendar.php and please see syllabus in Canvas by logging into your Canyons ID Student. 

Students can expect to spend an average of 1-2 hours a week in Canvas after Zoom class meetings completing discussions and quizzes. There will be much typing and speaking to do in Zoom meetings and in Canvas Discussion, therefore laptops are the most effective.A microphone and webcam are needed to show projects, illustrations, etc. via Zoom during the live meetings.

Types of Assessments

Weekly online quizzes in Canvas. Online discussion boards and written assignments in Canvas.End of level assessment will be given in Canvas and Zoom.

Other Relevant Course Information

Learning a language requires time and practice. Students who miss more than 3 classes will be dropped from the class and can register for the class again. Students must inform instructor by email if they can no longer attend the class or will miss a class. Students must regularly participate in Zoom and Canvas discussions.

This course can be accessed on the first day of class via Canvas at https://coc.instructure.com. Log into Canvas using your CanyonsID single sign-on:

The Counseling Department offers appointments online. You can schedule an appointment by visiting the Online Counseling website. Counselors can help you map out a plan to reach your educational goals as well as advise you on course selection and registration.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). The phone number is 661-362-3259 that you can call 24/7. You can also e mail for an appointment at StudentHealthCenter@canyons.edu. At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center

The College of the Canyons Veterans Resource Center is a department within the Student Services Division at the college, created to help veterans and veteran dependents with applying to College of the Canyons, enrolling in classes, and requesting VA Education or Vocational Benefits.
