Introduction

Welcome to History of Rock & Roll, MUSIC-107 online section. This orientation letter is provided to give you a sense of the purpose, workload, and learning goals for the course. Because the course is 100 percent online, we will not meet on-campus for the duration of the course. All tests, exams, assignments, and conferences will be conducted online. There will be an official schedule published on the 1st day, and you will access this from the online course management system. For COC, we use a software program called Canvas; access to the course is included with your paid registration. The link to the course is: https://coc.instructure.com

Course Description

Explores the rise of Rock & Roll as a musical genre and examines its place in modern society.

Course Objectives:

By the end of this course, students will be able to:

1. Differentiate between various styles of rock and roll.
2. Trace the evolution of rock & roll through different historical and social periods.

What to Expect in this Course

MANDATORY ATTENDANCE DURING THE FIRST 72 HOURS OF THE COURSE:

In order to be counted as present and attend the course, the college requires that you attend the first day of instruction, and begin to complete coursework at that time. IMPORTANT: If you do not login and complete the first assignments by the end of the first week of the session, you will be dropped from the course (No Show Drop).

You need to login, and complete the instructions and tasks located in the Mandatory Orientation Module, no later than 72 hours from the start date of the course.

The coursework consists mainly of reading from the course text, viewing and listening to recordings and musical performances, and writing and responding to prompts given by the instructor related to topics in the course outline.

Regarding live Zoom meetings (optional): Although this course does not require video/synchronous communication, I will offer  an optional drop-in online office hour each week of the course, as an optional live session for anyone interested in reviewing course content, or asking relevant questions about the current lessons and topics. Written and evaluative coursework: This course has no term projects, but there will be 2-4 short research assignments, requiring outside research of specific musical artists and styles, and sharing your knowledge and research with the class via class-wide discussions.

Types of Assessments

The course contains assigned reading from the course textbook, articles and video clips from websites, and various news and other audio/visual media online. Coursework consists of short research and viewing of media assignments, discussions, tests, and exams to do according to the course schedule on Canvas.

There are no term projects or term papers required for this course.

Before proceeding with our course on Canvas, complete these steps:  

1. Purchase your textbook in your preferred format: Print text or the eTextbook, at the campus bookstore (in person) or via the COC campus bookstore, OR via the textbook publisher's online store (connect4education.com).
2. The textbook publisher includes an Access Code with your textbook purchase; to complete the registration process, go back to our course's Orientation Module on Canvas, and select the link page entitled "CLICK HERE TO ACCESS THE C4E COURSEWARE"  which will take you to the courseware registration page on the Connect 4 Education courseware site. Upon completion of the courseware setup, return to Canvas and proceed with the Orientation Module.

All course materials for this course are delivered online; your computer and Internet connection should be outfitted for basic online communication to include:

• A Mac OS, PC/Windows OS (Windows XP or higher), or Linux OS-based computer;
• An Internet connection (broadband speed recommended for video and chat features);
• A current web browser (Google Chrome recommended, however, Firefox, Safari, IE 9, should work as well);
• QuickTime player software for viewing video materials (free player, available through the Apple website at: http://apple.com/quicktime/download/
• Adobe Reader software installed, (this is pdf file viewer to read online articles, available for free from Adobe at: http://get.adobe.com/reader/
• Synchronous (live video) meetings: Although there are no required synchronous meetings, I hold office hours online via live video (Zoom) weekly; see our course schedule on the Syllabus home page of Canvas for details.

Workload for our course

As there are no on-campus meetings for our course, there will be assignments and activities that require online research. On average, students will spend between 90-130 hours of study for this course over the full-length semester.

If at any point in the session you have difficulty keeping up with course content/assignments, please do not hesitate to contact me; I will also make an effort to check in regularly with you via our campus email.

Circumstances may arise which require modifications of the above guidelines and the following schedule of assignments for the course, as deemed necessary by The instructor reserves the right to make necessary changes, in compliance with COC academic policies.

Management of Stress and Mental Health

Often the pressure on our students is very strong, involving academic commitments, relationships, outside jobs and family pressure to name a few. The staff and faculty of College of the Canyons are here to see you succeed academically and care about your emotional and physical health. You can learn more about the broad range of confidential student services, including counseling and mental health services available on campus by visiting the Student Health & Wellness Center in the Student Services Building (across from the bookstore). At the Canyon Country Campus the Health Center will be in the new Student Services Building.

Also, the National Suicide & Crisis Lifeline number is now 988. All students at COC are encouraged to enter that phone number in their cells. You can call it when you, or someone you know, is having thoughts of suicide or is in severe distress.

You can also now use the Crisis Text Line: Just text "Courage" to 741741. Someone will get back to you immediately. Its free, 24/7, and confidential.

Veterans Resource Center
