College of the Canyons is located in Santa Clarita, California, about 30 miles north of downtown Los Angeles, and covers a 367-square-mile service area in northern Los Angeles County. With a 2020 census population of 228,673, Santa Clarita is the third-most populous city in the county. The city lies within the Santa Clarita Valley, bounded by the San Gabriel Mountains to the east, the Santa Susana Mountains to the south and west, and the Sierra Pelona Mountains to the north. The Santa Clara River passes through the city from east to west. The area's Mediterranean climate produces hot, dry summers and mild winters.

This comprehensive campus covers 153.4 acres and is located along the eastern side of Interstate 5 in the Valencia community of Santa Clarita.

College of the Canyons offers 107 associate degree¹ and 207 certificate programs¹ at campuses in Valencia and Canyon Country and a regional training center in Castaic. The college introduced its first bachelor's degree program – a Bachelor of Science in Building Performance – in 2025. Annual enrollment is 39,360 students².

In addition to meeting the academic needs of students seeking transfer and career technical education, the college fields 17 men's and women's athletic programs and plays a key role in driving the local economy. On average, the Workforce & Economic Advancement Division  generates approximately $2.5 million per year to provide cutting-edge training for thousands of employees at numerous companies.

The college participates in a variety of innovative partnerships that have redefined the traditional role of community colleges. It collaborates with nearly every social service agency in the community, as well as school districts, the city of Santa Clarita, chamber of commerce, industry associations, and numerous businesses.

College of the Canyons has served the community since 1969. During that time, it has fostered a reputation for innovation, excellence, and student success.

University Center

The Dr. Dianne G. Van Hook University Center at the Valencia campus allows students to earn bachelor's, master's and doctoral degrees and credentials from partner institutions, improving access to education by eliminating the need to commute long distances. Partner universities offer 19 degree programs and two credential programs¹.

Advanced Technology Center

The college is preparing to build an Advanced Technology Center at the Valencia campus to train students for careers in high-tech fields, keep local companies at the forefront of their industries, and enhance the community's economic vitality. In the interim, a temporary off-site center continues to expand its capabilities. Recent additions include a new Milling and Tooling Pathway that qualifies students for apprenticeships.

Regional Fire Academy

The college is developing a Regional Fire Academy to help provide California with skilled first responders. The academy, which will be located at a facility shared with the Los Angeles County Fire Department, is in the process of pursuing accreditation. Recent developments include the purchase of three new firefighting vehicles for training purposes. 

Healthcare Training

The college is well under way in developing new degree and certificate programs to bolster career training and healthcare for the community.

• Clinical Laboratory Scientist – This program enables students to upskill and take on more responsibilities in lab settings. It is approved by the California Department of Public Health and results in a Certificate of Achievement in Clinical Laboratory Science.
• Physical Therapist Assistant – This program can be completed in four semesters, and graduates will be eligible to take the national exam.
• Occupational Therapy Assistant – This program can be completed in 16 months and includes fieldwork that prepares students for the national exam and to work in the field.
• Pharmacy Technology – This program’s eight courses can be completed in two semesters and will train students for entry-level pharmacy technician positions. Students gain practical skills through supervised externships.
• Diagnostic Medical Sonography – This two-year program leads to an associate degree and includes 1,100 hours of hands-on clinical experience to prepare students for licensing exams and careers as ultrasound technicians.

The Santa Clarita Valley is situated between the San Fernando and Antelope valleys in northern Los Angeles County. It is perhaps best known for the Six Flags Magic Mountain theme park. The valley features a mix of suburban areas, commercial and industrial centers, and rural farmland. The City of Santa Clarita is the main population center and third-largest city in Los Angeles County. The greater Santa Clarita Valley also encompasses the communities of Agua Dulce, Canyon Country, Castaic, Newhall, Saugus, Stevenson Ranch, Valencia, and Val Verde. Traversing the valley are the Santa Clara River and two major freeways – Interstate 5 and State Route 14 – as well as the Pacific Crest Trail.

• Demographics – This fast-growing, educated, and relatively affluent region is home to nearly 300,000 residents.

Wm. S. Hart Union High School District

The William S. Hart Union High School District serves approximately 21,000 students in grades 7 through 12 in seven high schools, a continuation school, Academy of the Canyons (a middle college high school located at the Valencia campus of College of the Canyons), independent study school, six junior high schools, and an adult school.

Saugus Union School District

The Saugus Union School District is the valley's largest elementary school district, serving approximately 9,000 students in grades K through 6 at 15 schools, as well as preschool programs.

Newhall School District

The Newhall School District serves approximately 6,000 students in grades K through 6 at 10 schools.

Sulphur Springs School District

The Sulphur Springs School District, the second oldest school district in Los Angeles County, serves approximately 5,100 students in grades K through 6 at nine schools. The district's 10th school is under construction.

Castaic Union School District

The Castaic Union School District serves approximately 1,900 students in grades K through 8 at four schools. The district also has a dedicated preschool.

California Institute of the Arts

California Institute of the Arts is a private art institute incorporated in 1961 as the first degree-granting institution of higher learning in the U.S. created specifically for students of the visual and performing arts. One of its noteworthy benefactors is Walt Disney.

The Master’s University

The Master’s University is a private non-denominational Christian institution that serves approximately 2,600 students.
