Introduction to Online Instruction
Offered in Non-Credit!

Instructor: Katie Coleman

Introduction to Online Instruction explores the application of learning theories for online learners; differences between face-to-face and online learning; resources for online teaching and learning; course management systems and online learning tools; and best practices for online learning. The class is designed so that participants will experience the components of an online course from both student and instructor perspectives.  (36 hours, a five-week, 100% online course taught via Canvas)

Participants would need to first complete the 4 hour self-paced Canvas class to prepare for IOI.

Critical Thinking Srategies

Critical Thinking introduces instructors to fundamental critical thinking tools for use with students, including strategies for practical application. Encourages instructors to utilize and apply innovative rhetorical analysis in the learning environment. Examines the implementation of critical thinking skills at all levels of course design.

Engaging live sessions in online classes don’t just happen. They’re intentionally designed! By the completion of this 2-week course, you will demonstrate your ability to schedule, conduct, archive, and share a live session. You will also develop inclusive community norms and a lesson plan for a live session that uses effective instructional skills to support the diverse needs of community college students. You will achieve these goals by asynchronously engaging with content and completing assignments in Canvas, as well as attending synchronous sessions in Zoom that scaffold your learning.

By the end of the course, you will be able to:
Demonstrate the ability to use Zoom to schedule, conduct, and record engaging live online instructional sessions.
Demonstrate the ability to design live online instructional sessions that support community college students through active learning.
Use recordings of live instructional sessions in compliance with student privacy, accessibility, and interaction requirements, and legal recommendations.
Develop course materials that foster inclusion for all students.

Reading Strategies explores current research about academic literacy and effective strategies to enhance critical reading in discipline-specific areas. The Reading Apprenticeship (RA) framework describes the components necessary to support reading development in content areas and create classroom environments that are more student-centered, collaborative, and metacognitive.
