DAVID STEVENSON

  Professor of Communication Studies

 

 

David received his M.A. (1992) and B.A. (1986) in Information and Communication Studies from California State University, Chico. His emphasis in graduate school was the Human Communication option, with a major in rhetoric and public address. Political communication, persuasion and argumentation are his areas of expertise. Davids undergraduate work focused in Mass Communications. He majored in Radio and Television Broadcasting with a minor in Psychology. As a broadcaster, he worked in management as a Director of Development for National Public Radio affiliate KCHO-Chico, had his own morning drive jazz program, was a news and sports director and anchor, did voice-overs, public affairs programming, and was talent in several videos. Before taking his position in the fall of 1999 at College of the Canyons, Davids teaching career began in 1988 at CSU, Chico. After CSUC, he taught at Butte, Yuba, Mt. San Antonio, Santa Monica and El Camino colleges. He has taught many courses within the communication discipline including Public Speaking, Business and Professional Communication, Argumentation and Debate, Small Group Communication, Voice and Diction, and Speech for Radio and Television. He is currently developing the COC Forensics (speech and debate) program. Davids teaching philosophy is student-and ethics-centered. The motto for his classes is a commitment to excellence. He pushes his students to think beyond their current academic situation to a future in graduate school. His high academic standards motivate students to excel beyond what they thought possible. The opportunity to affect his students lives in a positive way is very challenging and rewarding. David believes very strongly that successfully completing the course work in the communication studies discipline prepares the student for success academically, interpersonally, as well as, for any career path.
