Health Professions Programs at COC
College of the Canyons has specific Health Professions Programs, such as Nursing, Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), a post-baccalaureate Clinical Laboratory Science (CLS) certificate for individuals with a current MLT license, Physical Therapist Assistant (PTA), Occupational Therapy Assistant (OTA), Diagnostic Medical Sonography (DMS), and Pharmacy Technician. Each of these specific programs has their own requirements and application procedures in order for eligible applicants to be selected for, and admitted into, the specific program. Once selected into one of these health professions programs that a student applies for, the student proceeds through a cohort of classes made up of lectures, laboratories, and clinical training. Each program enables students to foster development of analytical and problem-solving skills required in the profession and prepares the student to ultimately sit for the licensure exam of the profession.
There is a high demand for counseling appointments, especially for pre-health professions student appointments. To be better prepared for a future counseling appointment, please attend one of the following workshops offered by the Counseling Office BEFORE scheduling an appointment:
- COC Health Profession Programs Workshop:
Provides an overview of the various health professions programs that we currently have at COC (Nursing, Medical Lab Technician, Clinical Lab Science, Certified Nursing Assistant course, Phlebotomy course, Emergency Medical Technician courses) and/or that are set to begin at COC this Fall 2025 (Physical Therapist Assistant, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Diagnostic Medical Sonography, and Pharmacy Technician). It will review the prerequisites that are required for each, so as to help students with their education planning, how to make yourself as competitive as possible, where to go to learn more about the application processes for these programs, and basic details regarding the TEAS test that will be needed for some of the programs (Nursing, PTA, OTA, and DMS). Support will also be provided for students who are wanting to do some career exploration within the health profession programs, and some resources for possible internship or volunteer opportunities. - Pre-Nursing Advisement Workshop:
Provides an overview of which classes to take in order to prepare for the Associate Degree of Nursing program as well as pre-licensure BSN or RN-BSN programs. It will also go into details about how to make yourself as competitive as possible, take advantage of volunteer or internship opportunities, TEAS study guide information, and your grades. We will also review the common application timelines for different programs.
You may also attend one of the Information Sessions hosted by the specific health profession program:
- CLINICAL LAB SCIENCE
- DIAGNOSTIC MEDICAL SONOGRAPHY
- EMERGENCY MEDICAL TECHNICIAN (EMT)
- MEDICAL LAB TECHNICIAN (MLT)
- NURSING
- OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY ASSISTANT
- PHARMACY TECHNICIAN
- PHYSICAL THERAPIST ASSISTANT
If you attended an information session and did not have a COC Student ID number at the time, please visit the Counseling Office front desk.
Once you complete a workshop and/or information session, you will receive an email notification that you are able to schedule a future pre-program health professions counseling appointment.
